Congrats! Could you please elaborate little how you trained before you started the NSM?
thank you! and sure - was very much a run once a month for cardio fitness type of person for around 8 years. was never a super sporty kid. was more into traditional weightlifting in adult years. covid hit, gyms closed, run time.
i *think* the first plan i followed was a hal higdon one which got me over the line in 1:41 for my first half marathon in 2021. was happy with the result, but reoccuring injuries would mean very long spells of no runs, textbook boom > bust which lead to frustration I was never getting better. my weekly mileage was peaking at around 30km a week until I'd need to take time off.
managed to get covid A LOT which really messed with my health so bought a running watch thinking it would spur me on. did a lot of hiking throughout 2024 which got me back on track. got back into running by following garmin's daily suggested workouts which seemed great at the time. this got me across the line of my first marathon last year for 3:25, but still on the edge of boom/bust. I'd run my easy runs waaaay faster than my ones now, and lie to myself that it was zone 2 or whatever even though it wasn't anywhere near. fully plateaud at this point. weekly mileage around 60km at peak. did another very hilly marathon towards end of last year which translated to about the same time as the flat 3:25. and then a trail 50k in a not so great time, but enjoyed the experience.
now i'm hitting 80-90km weekly mileage whilst working a physical job and feeling better than i ever have. i'm annoyed at myself for not doing this sooner, but such is life. will be running another trail 50k in may and i'm looking to follow NSM but make some adjustments around the long runs again. i really don't want to get off track with this method.
