Robert Young fakes run across America

I think what we have is Rob is a decent ultra runner. He likes running, is capable of running around slowly for a while.

I really wonder what Rob and his crew was thinking. When did they make the decision to cheat? Did they start the race with good intentions but realize how utterly difficult it was?

Or did the team know from the get go they'd fake portions of it?

What's more mind boggling to me is that there's a group of them. Is Rob so likeable that he convinced the others that it would be okay and be a good idea?

My guess is that he's run a good portion of it, all the 9,10min+ segments. But his downfall is his ego.

He claims to be doing it 'for the kids' but the reality is his behaviors point towards a person who craves attention. The fabricating of his initial marathon story, the buying of twitter followers, the stealing a photo of some other dude and claiming it's himself, the constant wikipedia editing.

His ego made him want to seek notoriety.

It's also funny how all these cheating runner types also make classic mistakes. Since they really aren't good runners, they all make the mistake of overstating their PR's, paces, etc. Hobby joggers don't notice because to them, a 5min or 6min mile all seem plausible. But the running nerds of letsrun know plausibility of paces down to the second.

So when the RV gets impatient and drives 25mi at near his documented marathon PR, we know it's BS.

Anyways, it's a fascinating psychological study.

Amazing how he hit the wall as soon as scrutiny came from this thread and his TV film crew showed up.

80mi days cruising and clicking off 7min pace to 40-45mi days.

I don't think that Rob has been running upwards of 90% of it, as one poster speculated. Since this thread has appeared, he has only been managing around 60% of the daily totals that he was managing before suspicion was cast. His totals may well continue to fall if he is consistently monitored. 40-55 miles/day may or may not be sustainable for him over a period of more than a few days.

I can't believe I'm being drawn in to another one of these threads. I swore that the Rossi thread would be my last cheater thread, after wasting far too much time there.

My guess is that they didn't start off with the intention of cheating, but they just completely underestimated how difficult it was. It's like the guy on the treadmill at the health club saying that he can break 4 minutes for the mile or 2:15 for the marathon any time he wants to. He really believes this, but has no idea how difficult it really is.

Once they actually started, reality set in, and Robert wasn't making anything remotely close to his daily predictions, so a little ride here, a little ride there. It's a slippery slope. Once they started on this path of deception, it was probably hard to turn back.

Why do we have to come up with the footage? They have cameras and everything else they could upload rob running these splits that he is running but they won't. The burden of proof is on you guys! Are you telling me no one has filmed any of his runs to throw up proof that he is legit? If I wasn't a cheat and a liar and someone called me out like this I would be going out my way to have someone following me and filming me for these sections to prove they are true. I would be furious that people called me a liar but would be easy to disprove the very next day. That is if I wasn't a fraud.

The cheating/lies/misinformation, whatever you want to call it, started years ago, it's been documented and highlighted here. What's occurring now is just a continuation and, it would appear, aided and abetted by his marketing/publicity man and current crew.

You're right about one thing though, reality has set in for fantasist Rob and his crew.
