I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributes to the thread, even with the trolls or attention seekers often looking to make it about them. For me, this thread is about the collective and how they have been brought together by someone who largely remains a mystery to us in sirpoc.
I have just had my first big breakthrough training like this and my first breakthrough in almost 8 years as i approach 50 years of age. I've slowly declined or at least seemed to just be treading water year to year, or getting worse. I've tried coaches or coaching myself, but it always seems to be "another disappointing year".
A friend gave me the amazing NSM book in early December. I read it and a few things dawned on me after I decided it was the best running book I've ever read pitched for everyday runners:
Firstly, I was amazed I had never heard of this guy before. Secondly, how well written, communicative it was with good humour; and thirdly, it sounded like a solution to all the problems. Almost too simple or too good to be true. But, considering the time or investment I had made to try and find a new running lease of life, why not just try it?
I started it almost straight away and began to immediately feel less tired. By Christmas I felt fresh, but no improvement. By the end of January the same. But the last couple of weeks suddenly I had a huge jump in fitness in the 3x subthreshold workouts a week, so entered a race and ran 18:02, which is close to the fastest I've run in 8 years and only 30 seconds off my lifetime PB set at 37. I can't believe I'm saying this but I feel I could set a new PB at 50. It's realistic suddenly after running low 19s for so long.
The big thing is that I read a lot of the thread and kept seeing people with real world experience, saying how the 8+ week period is when to start judging it. Maybe it was slightly longer with me, but the thread remains such a good resource due to all the kind people who have taken the time to write their own experiences.
I suddenly look forward to running. Going from easy running as a % of max from 75% to 65% is a game changer for me. 80/20 I tried and it's crasy how hard they have you going on the '80'. I actually look forward to running these really easy runs, and as such, the workouts feel like something I'm also fresh and looking forward to.
Wish I had stumbled on this kind of schedule 15 years ago! Cheers ro all and of course sirpoc himself. Who knows why he made his first post. But, I know if he didn't, as lame as it sounds, I wouldn't be enjoying running like I am again today. Just bought 3 more copies for other running buddies of mine and although I know book royalties suck, hopefully it's enough for him to enjoy a well earned pint 🍺
