It is for some whom I've personally encountered, at least. They've said things like "Christians, Catholics, Muslims, and Jews" when talking about religious groups in the U.S.

And I've seen some stuff online (including YouTube) that makes it clear that the speaker thought "Christian" did not include Catholics.

Thanks for the reference. That was interesting. But the author of the study in the article you cite actually does not support your thesis that political affiliation serves as the base.

But he also says a move toward your thesis seems to be happening at present.

The study just suggests that there is movement in both directions. Our identity informs our politics, but our politics also informs our identity.
