I don't like Musk as a person at all. And I held off investing for a long time for that reason. But it just got to the point where I couldn't deny that Musk is right about the future and his company is in the best position to profit from that future. So when coronavirus hit and stocks took a dive, I bought some shares. Now they have gone up five fold.
Agreed that Jobs was a little nuts. Musk is more so....tenfold more so. Again, I don't disagree that he has the right vision about where the world is headed. I'm just not confided that that translates into business savvy. Even though I am in a position to invest in individual stocks (no debt, own my home outright, already invest more than 15% of my income into mutual funds within retirement vehicles), I do not invest in individual stocks. If I did, I wouldn't pick his company.

Musk has proven his business savvy. He did pretty well with PayPal, which he founded and sold for $1.5 billion. Both Tesla and SpaceX are now huge profitable companies.

The market rally is a nice indicator of confidence.
I would hope that it leads to hirings or at least holding off on layoffs.

Tesla has been a revolving door of engineers and good leaders. Musk is a crook and he has squandered a lot of good opportunities. His massive advantage was being the first one out of the gate and that is an advantage that is clearly not easy to eat into. I understand that may be a good enough reason for many to invest. But like I said, shady financials, inflated performance targets that never materialize... the company is always edging on a massive cash shortage as their cash burn is insanely high, but Musk always steps in throws the market a little bone with some insane assertion. IMO he's running a ponzi scheme. Regardless, there is way too much volatility in that stock for me to place any reasonable mount of long term dime in it. But for those who have put their money in, no doubt it's been a great return to I respect that.

And you are working off of very old data. They are out of the "cash burn startup phase". They have been tremendously profitable for each of the last five quarters -- despite the pandemic. So they've become a cash machine.
They used their high stock price to raise $7 billion this year. It was basically, free money. That brings their balance sheet well into the "healthy" category.
It's not the high-risk stock it was two years ago. Seriously, take another look.

I would say high cost of living, but that's not an issue for me these days
