Reagan won in 1980 with less than 51% of the vote and got 489 electoral votes out of 538 (91%). That was because Carter got 41% and John Anderson got 7%, and that split vote lead to Reagan winning 44 states.

Nope. Two Georgia seats are going into a runoff on Jan 5th. Republicans need to win both to reach 51. Dems need only 1 of 2 to reach 50 and with Harris control the Senate. The main difference is that all of the legislation that McConnell blocked moves forward for voting. And any legislation the Republicans want to consider moves forward. It is unlikely Republicans will have McConnell as leader in a split-Senate, they would choose a moderate to maximize the amount of legislation they could tailor to get a few Democrats to approve, because if they fail to do that then Harris decides what passes and what doesn't (a Republican nightmare thanks to McConnell's prior activities he cannot undo).

I am indeed aware of this, but seems unlikely to get adopted across most states. At some point the states that agree to this would have to take the risk of going ahead with it, without the other states signed up. But it's a good push to keep up some pressure.

I was looking at something with the GOP would get with GA seats and settle in at 51. But if it is heavily looking like 48-50 then GA will be a blood bath between now and January 5th. Republicans will do everything possible to stop cities from voting, and drive as many rural voters to the polls as possible. And on election day Trump Trains from in and out of the state may block access to voting places in the cities on election day. Yes, very ugly.
If it ends up 51 R to 49 D, then McConnell keeps the leadership and nothing the House and Biden want gets done. And nothing the Rs want get approved by Biden. The best result is 50-50 because then the Senate operates in the more civil manner where ALL legislation get a floor vote. In fact, that should be the hardcore rule. Why a single person gets to decide what is voted on is not what the Constitution called for. That needs to die. And they way it must die is permanently operating the Senate under the 50:50 rules, whatever the Senate split is. if it was 40 Republicans to 60 Dems, the leader of the 40 Republicans could always call for a floor vote with the leader of the Democrats not being able to stop the vote. Much more civilized, and a chance for the minority party to create legislation that is more balanced and can attract members from the other side to vote with them.

There shouldn't be any betting market change since that county likely cuts into the Trump lead. I was hoping for a pass today but I'm not sure there's enough out there in other counties for the gap to be fully made up by end of day.
