Proposal 1: Raise the salary of every politician by 35%. Let good, smart decent people afford to be politicians. Clearly the public sector pays so low that the smart ones can't afford public service.

That's a heck of a lot of electoral votes.

Although to be fair, there are a lot of ridiculous polls coming out from partisan pollsters that are helping the R polling averages. So maybe it's not really this close.

I'm with agip on that. The 2020 situation is fixable as long as Democrats are given the chance to fix things. Same thing happened in 2008. Democrats come in and clean up the Republican mess.

That does not explain why the federalist democracy is deteriorating. The people have less power and a muted voice. And I say that about the large minority as well. The ultra rich are the ones with almost unrestricted power in this country. Even if there is the illusion that trumpers are winning, they are arguably the worst off Americans under the current political system. And this loss of voter power and voice is because over time politicians have sold us out to interest groups without consequence. Institutions are holding, but some barely and for now. Look at the DOJ, you can’t tell me that the gaps aren’t serious. We knew it before, but are now seeing proof that all a corrupt POTUS has to do is install enough corrupt loyalists to shield him and normalize criminality. The DOJ has started to seriously crumble. And let’s look at the broader economy and markets. Who are they benefitting more disproportionately than ever before? Come on man the common voter is I n big fkn trouble and this power shift is not reversible.

Trump has empowered a lot of people to try to scam the public like he has been in. These nutjobs and opportunists are running for local office all over.

You know what I hate most about that? When Dems get into the driver’s seat they have to spend all their political capital trying to clean $hit up and are unable to instill the progressive agenda they keep promising. In the short run Rs think this helps them as the pendulum swings the other way but damn we could never get anything done.

All I'd say is that US history is full of crooked and near-failed institutions. Things have often been worse than this, institutionally. And we come back and fix things. I mean when has the country *not* been set up to help rich people????

Sure, I have worries. But I do think this 4 year period could be a forest fire that clears the dead wood and lets a new and better government and politics rise.

This is the first time I am not optimistic about the US, regardless of the winner. But I’m glad you’re hanging in there! Let’s see how it goes

Fact of the matter is that Biden could lose ALL of those (he won't) and STILL win the election.

Something fascinating that describes a plague like COVID and a failed reelection attempt by a governor from as a tale written in 1912. There was a Trumper in 1900! who was worried more about the economy than people dying, so he denied there was a plague at all.

The above is something I ran across while deciding whether or not to read Jack London's post-apocalyptic fictional tale, the Scarlet Plague. A plague occurred from 1900-1904 in San Francisco. London lived in the Bay Area at the time of the plague and his tale partly based on his personal experiences with that plague. The fascinating part is the governor of California part below.

The plague epidemic was recognized by medical authorities in March 1900, but its existence was denied for more than two years by California’s Governor Henry Gage. His denial was based on business reasons, to protect the reputations of San Francisco and California and to prevent the loss of revenue due to quarantine. His failure to act quickly may have allowed the disease to establish itself. Federal authorities worked to prove that there was a major health problem, and they isolated the affected area; this undermined the credibility of Gage, and he lost the governorship in the 1902 elections. The new Governor George Pardee implemented a medical solution and the epidemic was stopped in 1904.

Thanks for sharing. It really is tragic that we are getting first hand experience in what happens when leadership is required from a narcissistic and incompetent person. After seeing how it quickly got out of control in China, how did Trump think he was going to lie it away?

He's not sorta right and he's not technically correct:

These are small changes. If you compare Trump's approval ratings vs other presidents (about half way down the webpage linked) it's remarkably stable. His approval ratings are nearly fixed regardless of circumstances.

I love Jack London, but I wasn't even aware of "The Scarlet Plague". I'll be sure to read it now,--thanks!
