RTJ on Strava says that he wants to represent GB. And 2:10 is just the first step, what do people think are his chances stacked against Sessmen, Cairess, Mahamed etc. I just don't know if he has the ability to kick on below 2:10 but if anyone can prove me wrong it woud be him.
Hopefully training with a team will be a massive help for him.
That podcast was more than that. At the end of it, he accused "Mr. Boomshacklacka," as he calls his ex-friend Nick Bester, of doping and provides "evidence" of Bester blowing past doping controls at the finish of the Berlin Marathon when he ran 2:20 (the testers were there for the elite women, not some random dude running 2:20). Then he goes on a rant about how his ex-coach in Boulder was behind the "Let's Run Hate." Didn't he run for Rick Rojas while he was up there; I have a hard time seeing how a guy who appears to still use a flip phone could be behind the bot-fueled campaign Fox says insulted him. Then Fox plugs his pay-to-post forum as better than Let's Run because nobody will be saying anything mean on it. Then he says that "Let's Run posters are in a funny spot, I wouldn't want to be them, let's leave it at that.* After that, he goes on and on about how the only place he can live at the moment is his native Australia. Worth a hate listen!
I haven't listened yet, and I won't subject myself to whole thing, but I see the show notes he says 'I'm around 79 kg and believe 65-66 kg aligns with a 2:12-2:15 goal.' Hasn't he only run under 2:20 once, and it took him many attempts? Add in he is now 39 and coming off basically a year of no running except for a short period that caused a stress fracture. If he ever runs under 2:20 again that would be a hell of an achievement. He must be delusional thinking he can make the stratospheric jump into true sub-elite territory.

He's not progress to the extent I was excited about. He was at a similar level to his fellow, but unheralded, ran to Japan guy - Ethan Shuley. However, Ethan has gone from 2:18 -> 2:11 -> 2:07. Also, he seems to speak better Japanese than Jake. He's not anywhere near as good at self promotion though. He's well worth a follow on YouTube.
Unless it's for some self-funded 50k event, I can't see Jake representing GB. There are so many fast UK men at the moment in the marathon.

Zero chance. He's an entertaining content creator who's cleverly created a schtik that's landed well with a YT audience but he'll never be anything more than a sub elite on an International Stage.
I very much doubt he'll ever have a big break through race like sub 2:10 as he leaves all his best running on the training field (arguably because likes = £$£$) and fails miserably converting it to race day.
Seems to be either off the juice, or entering overtraining territory. Who woulda thought running a bunch of fast 5Ks and doing all your "easy" runs at 7:00/mi isn't sustainable?
He said a while ago in a video that he believes doing easy runs faster is important for him
I predict Bester will do 2:18:XX at Tokyo and unfortunately Jake will have another rough race
Bester on his insta said he's off to get a scan on his Achilles as pain is >7 out of 10.. is he sandbagging us again like he did with his Win in the stacked Abu Dhabi race.
How do the sessions fit amateur v pro? I mean MTC are just k reps. Where’s the line?
wasn't suggesting there's anything sub standard about the sessions; while you get the odd john cook or mihaly igloi being a bit wacky, generally decent distance training looks more or less the same for everyone. just a comment on intention and personnel. london group has plenty of strong national level amateur runners but it's not brett robinson and stewart mcsweyn being looked over by nic bideau - ie people who do it for a living
I think the original posters point is that people at Cottage (sub 14 5k, sub 2:15 marathoners) are a lot closer to being professional/full time runners than Bester, Parkes, Goddard et al.

I think it's unlikely, but it's not zero. What you've got to remember is that pro marathoners will only want to target 2 marathons in a year, with at least one of those being a world major for a massive pay-day. The top guys don't necessarily chase GB vests, bar the Olymipics and there's been plenty of times that GB hasn't even sent anyone to the world or european championships because the top guys would rather race London / Berlin and no one else had the standard - Farah is our national record holder but never ran in a GB vest for the marathon. Then you've almost always got someone in the UK top-5 out with injury each year, plus right now, one of the top guys - Alex Yee, is doing the marathon as a side quest with no intention of lining up at a championship. Finally, every once in a while, championships clash and the marathon isn't an event where someone would race twice in one summer - next year is one of those years with the World Athletics championships and the European road running championships.
Jake was 18th in the UK last year, and if he couldn't improve on his time then yeah, I agree, zero chance. But, hypothetically, if he had managed to crack 2:10 at Valencia, he would've been 6th on that list. I think anyone who gets the standard and lands in the UK top 10 this year had a shot at making a GB team in '27.
Of the top-5 guys, Alex Yee won't take a vest, at least one will be injured, one or two will be pulled away to take a big wedge of cash and do Berlin and one or two will go the World champs. That leaves at least one spot at worlds and 3 spots (I'm guessing) on the Euros team. If Jake can run the standard then he's got a small, non-zero chance.
You definetly don't have to be the top-5 guys to make a team. Look at fellow YouTubers Callum Elson and Adam Fogg, making GB 1500m teams during the golden age of British 1500m running.

I stand corrected on the "zero chance" statement. Very valid points, well made.
I still think it’s sad that Scullion has basically packed it in to become a clothes salesman. To think he went from being a pro to copying Ben Parkes, but not doing it as well.
Are Keely and Jakob YouTubers? What about Sesemann and Yee? Are they looking at the likes of Fenton and thinking ‘I need to get in on that as a side hustle’?
You think it's sad that a pro runner has used his platform, created by himself, to create a new career for himself.
I mean yeah he could have kept plugging away not making much money and gone into obscurity without a future , seems reasonable.
I've bought some of the gear he now has. Singlets are gift , shorts not bad and the leggings ok. I prefer giving my money to an ex runner earning a living than a big brand tbh. Fair play to him
you can get scullions half tight shorts on ali express for 15 quid each btw, very easy to find. go a size up as its asian sizing. beware of the pockets though, theyre crap whether you get them from ali express or scullion, zipper will break after a bit of wear. other than that good shorts though

FoggDog and Elson only made teams in relatively low-key indoor/cross country events which the top runners have no interest in. Fogg is the poorest racer in the UK, cant see him making any further teams.
RTJ has zero chance of making a world champs team. if you dont run the qualifying time (which is around 2:06 / 2:07) they wont take you. they have no problem not selecting a full team. i feel hes reached his limit with his current build-up. his PBs only 2:14 and hes hasnt improved in a long time. if you can only run 14:40~ for 5km, you will not get near 2:10 no matter how many miles you run. theres to many tin pot races and not enough build-up and taper to target big performances. he can remain a 2:13-2:20 runner turning up and filming low key races but the big performances will evade him until he structures his racing and training more professionally

If I'd had near constant pain in my achilles for as long as he's claiming I might have had a medical intervention before now, and why do it days before you try and run a pb at Tokyo? Why not when it stopped you running last year, although during his time off running he was still running - so I think he has an exercise addition of sorts which might explain it...
Wonder how this plays out, hope it's not something serious but also not sure he's been the most sensible with this and general overtraining symptoms recently

I know the comment is about RTJ but I can't believe no one else says this about Fogg. The bloke is an awful tactician and every race is the exact same. He will always be a 3:49 miler but he's a shocking racer. He's also an awful person from all accounts.

If he switched to the Steeple, I think he could probably make the British Olympic Team.
