I see this as a similar move Mic made from Iona to Wisconsin.
Build up a mid major the best you can, send the end of your career at a larger school for more money.
New Mexico has gone through a lot of challenges for an athletic department. Lower funding, roster limits, etc. not the easiest place to recruit to either

Mid Majors will fade away in the NCAA. Or at least they will not be on top. That's why Joe Franklin jumped ship from NM. NO MONEY!!!!
I don’t think Franklin really wanted to leave UNM. I’m told he was attempting to leverage Louisville to get more money from UNM, but that backfired.
I would highly doubt that it backfired.
It's totally reasonable that he wanted to leverage the Louisville job for more money at New Mexico. If UNM came back and said they couldn't do anything he still decided that Louisville was the better choice for him.
There's no chance UNM was so offended that he was forced into going to Louisville after mentioning their offer. I'm sure he'd have rather stayed and gotten paid more or had better funding, but I wouldn't say that the likely huge raise at Louisville backfired.

Backfired as in, his hope that UNM would increase his pay to stay. So yes, in that case it did.

I envision somewhere in this country. There's a lonely old sole sitting in his underwear with a negative outlook on life reading these comments and scrolling with rapid fire down arrow clicks.
Its okay little buddy, its okay. one day you will smile and you will actually like someones comment.
