Oh .... and the Dems wanted to rush through the Merrick Garland confirmation hearings but now with Barrett it is wayyyyyy to close to the election. Let's wait til after the election!
It normally takes about four months to go through the full nomination, hearings, committee voting, and floor voting to get a Supreme Court Justice seated.
There were 10 months between Scalia’s death and the 2016 election. Not exactly “rushed.”
There were about 6 weeks between Ginsburg’s death and this years election. That is rushed. (No scare quotes required)
Add to the equation that Mitch’s “We ought to let the people decide” BS from last time when the vote was months away, while this time people are already voting while the committee hearings are going on.
I would say that the hypocrisy lies on both sides. Here is some examples of quickly some confirmations have gone:
Time between nomination and confirmation of some Supreme Court justices:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1993): 42 days
Sandra Day O'Connor (1981): 33 days
John Paul Stevens (1975): 19 days
Lewis Powell (1971): 45 days
Harry Blackmun (1970): 27 days
Warren Burger (1969): 17 days
