I don't think that will work. The people simply won't accept an outcome based on weird mechanics. It would probably prompt the #4 treatment.

1. Dies in office
2. Thrown in prison
3. Flees to exile
4. Taken out back and shot

there would be protests and he would be impeached again, but unless he breaks laws or the COnstitution, Trump would stay around for 4 more years if he gets there through Constitutional means.
The Constitution does not say how electors are chosen. It doesn't have to be by statewide voting.
