The Constitution does not say how electors are chosen. It doesn't have to be by statewide voting.

I would love to agree with you. But I am not so sure that much is up to "the people" at this point. It seems like GOP senators and governors have the power to do whatever they deem is in their own best interests.
I'd say there is a 0% chance that they are motivated by what is in "the people's" interests.
I'd give it a 25% chance that they deem it in their own interests to do whatever it takes to keep their party in power for another 4 years.

While I agree with most of the specifics in your post, the conclusion does not seem obvious to me.
Putin doesn't give a rat's ass about Trump one way or the other. His interest has always been in weakening the US, so I think that would be the thing he would weigh in determining whether or not to release the tapes - not Trump's welfare or any sense of fairness.
All the better if Trump did all of those things for Putin and Putin still spills things on Trump if he loses.
That Trump guy - he's not a good person.
