If 20% of the United States was occupied by a foreign power then President Trump would 100% have my backing to impose martial law.

Trump would only need the backing of enough of Congress to avoid being impeached. That's not a high threshold and would call into question whether he has the democratic legitimacy to do it.

Martial law, under the Insurrection Act, can be declared by the President without a formal vote or approval from Congress. It can be overturned by majority vote against it, however, which would be 51%, a pretty high threshold. What democratic legitimacy is being called into question here?

I wasn't aware congress can formally overturn a decision of martial law. If he can get 51% of Congress to agree then yes he would have democratic legitimacy.

Regarding Ukraine, we are in agreement. "He" (Zelenskyy) has not "cancelled elections", the Ukrainian parliament has approved the application of martial law in response to a armed conflict, which they are entitled to do.
