You guys have been saying that he has been committing tax fraud for years. Well so far there is no discussion of any tax fraud. NONE. Very highly paid tax attorneys have done his tax returns during this time and they are NOT going to risk their million-dollar salaries and partnerships in the best tax firms in NYC (and even risk jail time and licenses!) just to save someone - who you keep clamoring is broke! - to save Trump a few dollars.

1) Tax attorneys rarely prepare taxes, they represent clients in court and provide complex tax advice. Tax PREPARERS prepare taxes, under the supervision of a CPA (aka accounting firm management). You sound like the moron you are constantly referring to tax attorneys;
2) Mazars is not a reputable accounting firm. If you have ever followed any headlines from the industry, you'd know that accounting firms (esp small ones) have gotten themselves in loads of trouble for the sake of retaining business from criminal clients.
3) TRUMP is responsible for any tax fraud. HE is the one who provides the numbers. Tax preparers from the accounting firm are given information by trump's people to complete the returns. Trump is accountable for that information. He is personally liable. Tax preparers (the accounting firm) may also be found liable if they knowingly reported false information.
At least one tax violation (aka fraud) has been revealed by the NYT - treating Ivanka as a consultant despite her being an employee. Surely you don't believe that was a mistake. But let's see you keep weaving.

Trump supporters kept talking about how generous he was to decline his presidential salary and have it donated to charity.
I kept saying he did that to avoid paying taxes on it.
With the Apprentice money he took those earnings and claimed he put that into other businesses which happened to lose money so he kept claiming losses while earning over $400 million in salary and paid no taxes.
He couldn't do that with his presidential salary because he's not supposed to be running businesses while he's President.
I am sure he was advised to decline the presidential pay to keep his tax scheme going.
I guess the tax math lead to him having to pay $750 a year as President, which is a worse optic than paying nothing with because of carry forward losses.

The NY Times statement is kind of interesting in that it says the sources had legal access to the returns. It doesn't specifically say the source had the legal right to release the returns to the press.
All of the information The Times obtained was provided by sources with legal access to it. While most of the tax data has not previously been made public, The Times was able to verify portions of it by comparing it with publicly available information and confidential records previously obtained by The Times.
Presuming the leaker did not have legal authorization to release the forms and presuming that the returns do in fact contain evidence of criminality then the leaker probably has a strong defense against any potential prosecution. So if the end result is that Trump legally minimized taxes, embarrassing though the numbers might be, then the leaker may be in legal jeopardy. If the end result is that it exposes criminality (e.g. potentially Ivanka as consultant and employee) or a national security threat (e.g. Trump is financially beholden to undisclosed foreign interests) then I can't see the leaker being prosecuted.

As a talking point to the general voting public this probably makes sense.
I'd argue that emoluments and foreign entanglements are a potentially more serious issue, but there is less clarity and more complexity than fits in a campaign slogan on that issue. Still, actively working against the interests of the United States would be worse than mere incompetence and the deference to Russia by this administration is just weird.

Unfortunately COVID is old news and won't sway any new voters, except maybe for family members of those who died from it. The whole country already knew trump would drop the ball on COVID, but yes I do agree on GOP's lack of responsibility in pushing him. This tax return issue is huge though because it contradicts the billionaire/successful business man narrative which is used broadly as a justification for Rs to doubt any claims by Dems that he is incompetent. It also debunks the idea that he is somehow like the little guy, fighting the corrupt elites. He's much much scummier than any elite, because he not only takes full advantage of the rigged system, he tries to cheat it too.
But hey, to those who still feel good supporting a billionaire who proudly swindles taxpayers I say there is no hope for you.

Nothing prevents trump from releasing any part of his tax returns, nothing. It's pretty obvious to me why the "audit" never ends. We all know we have a criminal sitting in the WH and Mnuchin simply isn't going to ever allow that audit to end and relieve trump of his eternal excuse. If Trump wins, I guarantee you that audit would not conclude until at least 2025.

Richard Nixon did precisely that, when trying to convince Americans that he wasn't a (tax) crook.
Your tax returns are your personal documents and you're free to release them to the public.
