my favorite justification for the EC is that is does tend to bring all states into the game.
The US is a sort of continential empire...we're all one nation, but lordy we are diverse. NYCers have almost nothing to do with Wyoming people. Trying to hold a nation together with such diverse holdings...is very hard. The EC does, I think, help get that done.
Without the EC, I think the large population centers would run the country, and people in empty areas would lose contact with the nation. That can't be good or preferable.
That's why there are local officials, to make sure those people are well represented. A federal seat like the POTUS should be elected by all people, not just by some in strategic states. What would happen is a sharper focus on the machinery that drives the country. I'm baffled at the number of farmers barely making ends meet and the gov still subsidizing them. Coal mining??? Come on. Moving away from the EC would push the country as a whole to find better solutions. That needs to come with more than 2 parties.. as this is getting ridiculous.
