Thank you all for your replies, I think I will go to gym and see what doesn't hurt the next day and come up with a gym routine based on a process of elimination!

my fear is that things like bench press will increase the inter-abdominal pressure and cause pain and further tearing of the supposed "scars" due to my sh, but I guess if its not hurting its ok;

Also just wanted to mention, my sh happened differently from most of the people here, I used to run, but not too much, I did mostly weight training, and this happened to me while I was doing declined bench situps (it was my first time doing those). Anyways I thought it could be something else since obviously I am not runner (although I run about 2 hours a week). But it has become painfully clear that its not tendinitis. And the worst thing is the look doctors give you when you tell them you have sh.In fact I had a doctor friend who told me to go see a psychiatrist because this is all in my head :(

mine happened when doing an inverted situp, meaning, my back was past horizontal and toes extended while legs straight and pointed straight up at the sky. lots of intraabdominal pressure there, but i also was working against resistance, so mine was pretty violent. i too never ran, only when chased...

john... I live in Canada as well. I had bi lateral sports hernia and had them repaired in germany in september. don't count on canadian doctors, most of them don't know much about sports hernias. The two reputable surgeons in canada (that do NHL players) and doctor melosh in vancouver and doctor Brown in Montreal. From the research I did they are the canadian equivilent of meyers and cattey. Apparently they are the only two to trust with your body in canada. I exercised pre surgey but only a little based on how much pain I was feeling. Good luck

I had surgery by doc Caffey almost 4 weeks ago and I'm feeling great. I took 15 days off then 15 miles first week then 35 miles this week. I just running easy but I'm still running 7:00 pace. No pain in groin just some stomach tightness. I doing 50 push ups and core exercises with plenty stretching. I very happy how things are progressing so I would recommend him to anyone.

I am also from Canada and i have to say it sucks living here if you have this injury. I have had surgery with Dr. Muschaweck june 07 came back to Canada and Physiotherapists don't know what to do with me. I am going to the top physiotherapy clinic here in Toronto and its the first time they had a person with this type of injury. So they are trying exercises with me to see what will work. I still have a problem with walking, one leg is very very strong and one leg is weaker(sh leg). I have to mention that i was on a wheelchair for 4 months and walked with a cane for another 6 months before surgery so my case is a little bit different then most of you. For the guy living in Canada and waiting for surgery, make sure you get the right information. I am doing the exercises that i was given in Germany which helps a lot but i don't know how should i increase them. Here in Canada i was given pilates for recovery, and i got to tell you, pilates isnt good for this type of injury that involves a nerve. Anybody know any exercises that worked for them? to strengthen one side without aggravating the nerve? please share. I have been swimming every day which is amazing, but how do i strengthen the weak side of my body?

I've read a lot of comments here and it seems we all are quite different.

I had surgery in Germany last year and I'm a bit better.There was extensive nerve damage. I no longer have that constant horrible pain. But I still have no strength in my lower abdomen and I have done EVERY possible exercise. My problem seems to be several. I had osteitis pubis, you can see the resorption of the margins of the pubic bones. And my back is all locked up. I've been working on my back, but my left SI joint is still stuck. My only hope is that once I free my left SI joint my pubic joint will relax and my abdomen will get stronger. But that may be wishful thinking. Has anyone here had back problems? Part of the problem of trying to loosen my left SI joint is that I do some twisting which puts all the stress on the pubic joint. But if my SI joints stay locked up, then there is plenty of stress on the pubic joint.

I bet there is damage at that joint, but all MRIs have come back negative.

sher- try finding a physio who works with hockey players or athletes. Mine in Vancouver is very good and knowledgeble with sports hernias

My back never hurt, but it's been stiff for years. That's where my problem began and I hope by fixing it after having surgery in Munich I will finally be done. My midback is finally loose which has taken some stress off my groin. And I'm sure my pelvis is rotated slightly. My chiro doesn't think I have that much of a rotation, but being a former elite athlete and having really strong and tight muscles it might be too much of a rotation. The abdomen even after surgery in June 06 is still weak and the attachment to the pubic joint gets inflamed quite easily. I'm afraid that more surgeries will make me worse. I'm finally out of the horrific pain I exerienced for years.

for the guy from vancouver: whats the name of your physio? maybe i will come there just so he can give me the right exercises.

Nico Berg.... reccomended to me by another good physio Rick Celebrini. I'm sure there is someone in toronto who can help you. Maybe call dr. brown in Motreal and ask him or try calling the maple leaf or the senator and asking about their physios... may be they can reccomend someone for you

Hi "Went to Munich" How is your recovery going ? I had the operation about a month ago and still have pain in my lower abdomen which Dr Muschaweck tells me is nerve damage. How long does it normally take for this to go ?

the last number of posts remind me of exactly my situation.

i am about 17 mos post op with dr um for bilateral sh. still have pains in lower ab, si joint, tailbone, and adductor insertion.

i too did pilates after 6 mos out- not a good thing, i think it made me worse.

i too have nerve damage. i did not have an mri before my surgeries though, because my insurance (mvp in new york) would not approve of one, deeming it medically unnecessary! apparently i also had ripped my oblique(s) about an inch or two above the sh operation scar. that entrapped nerves. google "slapshot gut" or "hocky gut" and you might recognize something. i am not saying that others have had this as well but i don't know if um looks up that high when doing the sh surgery, and with no mri...

well, two reputable docs have told me i definitely tore those tissues and have massive scar tissue.

scar tissue can and will form in the injury and surgery! scar tissue causes pain for many, many people! it can grow over or very close to nerves which can cause nerve irritation. the ab muscles glide along each other in different directions, depending on the movement. the nerves pass through those layers. scar tissue impedes the movement and tugs on the nerves = ouch.

such pain will make your body lock up to protect that area, can affect the si joint, etc...

my sij has been in pain for a long time.

another thing to consider is the development of trigger points in the muscles attaching to the pelvis. those trigger pts can easily cuase the pains and dysfunctions that we are feeling.

in the past 4 mos i have been attacking those trigger pts after working with the scarring (still am working with scars) and it has allowed me to make leaps and bounds with some things.

perhaps a good phys med doc or even better an osteopath who does manipulations can help. definitely try neural therapy!

The question I've had for years, is my tight butt and back (sacrum) causing the abdomen to be weak or is the weak abdomen causing my hips and back to be so tight. My butt muscles never relax even after trying massages, prolotherapy, trigger point injections... So, I'm attacking everything. Butt my abdomen just hurts and won't get strong, no matter what I do. I've learned that ellipical trainers are no good. The spacing of my feet causes a pain in my midback which pulls on my abdomen.

i also think the ellipticals are bad. feet too far apart, i used one a couple weeks ago and afterwards my sij was killing me.

my gluteals are starting to mellow out. neural therapy and osteopathic manipulations, post- rolfing sessions has helped all that.

Hi, I just got sh surgery 5 days ago. My Dr. was Dr. Brundt at Barnes hospital in St. Louis. Said I had a significant tear and he also took ouot one of my nerves. So far I don't feel any better. My inner thigh still hurts if I squeeze my legs together. Is this normal?

I hate to tell you, but I never had pain down my thighs until my first surgery. But after five days you can feel lots of pain all over. My first surgeon made a mess of me. He sewed the nerves into the scar tissue. I remember driving home feeling more pain than I had ever felt in my tights before.

Mark- I still have random pains. I'm three months out. It feels better the more I work on my core

I live in the Houston, Texas area.. Anyone know of a Dr. in the area that knows anything about a Sports hernia ? I've been to a couple of sports Dr's locally but haven't been impressed... Can't find a good sports Dr. here....All I've heard is that I have a bad strain and to rest, ice, and get massage but it doesn't help much... I think the massage may even make it worse..
