Moving on= Kentucky and UNC should be moving on assistants in the next couple weeks. I've heard TCU has contacted a few coaches about the jumps job too.
If you have six coaches, each one has their niche/general specialty. Or if you can only afford to fund one aspect of your program, you concentrate on that.Or would you say Mark Wetmore is a lazy coach because he is primarily a distance coach? He also gets it done in cross country, which is another season. He is a distance guru and you are well out of touch with reality.

There is a sport made up of only distance runners it is called cross country. So if you want to have a distance only program why would the administration want to keep a track program that will never have as much success at the National and especially at the Conference level as a complete track program. Track and Field is made up of 21 events and it is bad for our sport when you have a distance only programs of 5 events. Track and Field is a sport as the name states where you have track athletes and you have field athletes. A good coach can coach any event/sport, you just have to put in the time and effort to learn the event or sport you want to coach. There are too many lazy coaches who do not want to put in that time and effort, I have a name for them its called BAD coaches.
Go run some more miles because obviously you are not thinking clearly enough yet, or better yet you should stop running so many miles so you can start thinking like a Track and Field coach and not a distance runner!!!

While Colorado is distance focused, they do have sprints jumps and throws on thie rosters and coaches to handle te events. Even Colorado wouldn't have the hubris to say they will ONLY have distance runners and coaches.

And now they have joined the PAC12 where they will be even worse than they were in the Big 12 at the conference championships (indoors and outdoors).
Furman has less than 3000 students total! Just be a niche sport where you hope to build something to be competitive at the national level. Similar thinking as a quarter of the teams that make CC Nationals routinely like Iona, Providence, Butler, Portland, Syracuse, Eastern Kentucky, etc. Nothing wrong with that at all or would you morons prefer University's continue to slash budgets and programs altogether as is the norm nowadays?
Schools like NC State are almost the same thinking; always at absolute bottom of ACC conference because they don't put any resources into anything other than distance runners (cross country).

Syracuse is not like the others in that they are a huge school with an incredible budget. They focus on distance, with an occasional track/field person, Jaret Eaton this year.
It sounds like a great idea, but how many times has this worked at a non-BCS conference school (Ivy League doesn't count)? Not very many and the ones that did it had to go all international. Unless they plan to go with all international runners, not a lot of non-BCS schools getting to the NCAA with American kids. These schools just cannot attract the kind of talent required to get to the NCAA.
On the men's side, you have Portland and William and Mary had some great teams under Gibby. Richmond men made it once in like 2010 with all American kids but have dropped off the face of the planet it seems.
On the women's side? Stony Brook is all New Zealanders and New Mexico is all British. William and Mary women back in the day under Mrs. Gibby is only example I can think of. They had some very good kids but even then it was a school that had some Canadian kids.
Toledo women these last few years have done really well at the NCAAs but that is a pretty big school that seems to attract a lot of talented American kids and a school that seems to develop at a high rate. Certainly a lot bigger than Furman.
I don't think it can be done at a school like Furman. Gary needs to do a better job of developing and I don't really see a long history of Rita developing much talent either.
