There are plenty of intelligent and educated trumpistas who believe absolutely that electing a Democrat--any Democrat--president would mean the end of their country.
Specifically, *their* country--what they imagine the USA is or was. Remember the football coach who said, "Three things can happen when you throw the ball, and two of them are bad"? These folks see a changing country, and they similarly believe that the majority of things that can happen with change are bad. They want to resist and if possible reverse the change, and Donald Trump was smart enough to see their fear, fan it, and cater to it.

They have real skin in the game--remember, in 2016 the median household income of Trump voters was higher than that of Clinton voters--and, for themselves and their children and grandchildren, they fear losing their situation.
