Biden under normal circumstances would not become President. But, we have a racist, amoral, brain-addled criminal in the White House, so Biden is appealing. Biden will beat Trump like a rented mule.

Correct - when you’ve had $hit flavored ice cream for four years, vanilla Biden seems beyond amazing
Also, we are seeing how one’s ability to win can be largely circumstantial. The charismatic Bill came up just at the right time to take on boring old Bush Sr. Then we had Bush Jr who was a real airhead but very likable and seemingly innocent. The fear mongering helped him beat Kerry whose party also could have done a better job in the run up. After the country took enough kicks to the nuts with Bush and Cheney it desperately wanted an inspiring leader again, and Obama takes it. Come 2016 and the climate was perfect for a conman to swoop in.
Nobody has challenged me on this yet - trump would not have been able to win in any prior election in recent history. He would have been obliterated by Obama in 2008 or 2012. Heck, trump would have had no shot at the GOP nomination in any election in recent history. The conservative base was still firm through 2008 and they would have mostly written trump off as a clown and utter embarrassment. He would have had no shot against Bush.
The GOP had been losing its appeal since Reagan and while the times begged for maturity and progression, the right kept cranking out dud after dud and doubling down on backward policies year after year (think Newt). The 2008 election was the breaking point IMO, with a visible change in the conservative climate as McCain found himself having to defend Obama on tv from baseless right winger attacks. Maybe decency was the last barrier standing in the way of Trumpism.
The mouth breathing masses had been primed by conservative radio and media for years to believe they were losing their land and white privilege, and with no strong alternative to Obama and no constructive messaging, this right wing sentiment hit a boiling point under Obama. They wanted blood and unfortunately the country now has a permanent citrus $hit stain to carry. Remember when many thought it couldn’t get worse than Bush? Well we may see even worse than Trump, but we have good reason to believe that first the country needs to puke and deal with a massive trump hangover. We’ll see what rises from the GOP rubble then.
