As SJS referred too, Omar Fabila (Cathedral). You should check him out and/or his social medias or Strava if you want a reference to someone who’s “making it out” as you stated. Pretty sure others in this thread have stated he comes from government housing in Downtown LA. I don’t know of any other “good” notable ones but that’s one! Sucks, their should be culture in running in Latin communities, but not enough resources sadly.
Yeah I did not expect this thread to have nearly twice the amount of posts as last year's CA TF thread. Then again, CA is a lot more stacked this year compared to last year I think
Rough day for Rylee, but she's been racing a lot. Hopefully it'll turn around by nationals
Did you see the start of the 1600M? Wait til this replay gets posted. All eyes were on the top 2 seeds who were teammates. Combe, the defending CIF champ and Blade, one of the best runners in So Cal history. Blade made a very aggressive move from the first step, immediately cutting off her teammate who had to jump back and lost a few steps to avoid falling. Dirty move to make on an opponent, let alone a teammate. Looks like it fired Combe up though! Would love to hear her comments on it.
Check out the HD Runners clip of an awkward dodging of a post-race hug. Combe at least to be a gracious winner

In the full replay, at 24:10, you can clearly see that Blade goes up to congratulate her teammate Combe just after she finished. It's the first thing Blade did. Then Combe went to hug Blade right as that HD Runners clip starts. It's misleading. By all accounts, those 2 are close friends.

How will Carson Hedlund do at CCS Finals? Could he possibly qualify for states? His comeback has been pretty impressive for the short time he began racing again.

I'm not sure. He's done it twice before but Aydon Stefanopoulos, Benjamin Bouie have all run faster than Hedlund's 1600m PR this year, and Miles Cook has the speed to do so as well given that he's beaten Hedlund's 800m PR this year. Personally, I think those 3 will get the automatic qualification spots to states. But there is a decent chance that Hedlund can still go to states by qualifying on time.
Got to call it, Daily has never stepped up on the biggest stage...yet. Watch out for the girl from Montgomery High, as she has run sub 10 before and ran 4:41 at league.
I'm not mad at that. Hanne is the most unheralded and humble superstar in Cali, and an outstanding person.
Speaking of good people- if we start a list of the nicest, most professional and most joyful kids in the sport (just based on interviews and "aura" when you see them at events) Engelhardt, Thomsen, Combe, De Brouwer, and Packard are the type of girls a college can build a team culture around. On the boys side, Noonan is a manchild. So professional, well-spoken and kind. So are Jubak and Zavaleta. Those are the type of young athletes that make me want to get back to coaching again.
I saw how considerate these distance winners are for their teammates in the 5 years of filming; the fact that they hang around to cheers their team, even their opponents. True story, at one meet a few years ago, the winner of the 3200 waited for his last place team mate to finish and gave him a hug for his efforts. The last place finisher had awful form. He didn't have to do that yet he did it because his team mate needed it. I believe that one act (and many more in the season) led to the last placer being #2 or #3 the next year. Few people saw this but I saw it through my cameras.
These athletes become leaders (not only in records or governance but in humanities, science, research and blazing new trails) in the real world.
Now contrast that with the sprinters who are from the football world ... it's a winner take all mindset.

Girls division 1 -- Rylee Blade took it out hard from the gun clearing the field. Her lead shrunk more and more on laps 3 and 4. Evangeline Williams and Braelyn Combe passed her on the backstretch of the last lap with Combe pulling away for the victory. Nice race.
Boys division 2 1600 meters -- As expected Evan Noonan won. He led gate to wire. 4:03.71. He pulled away on the backstretch and never looked back. Smooth, dominant winner.
Just watched the replay. No matter how many times you see it, that kick will never not surprise. Slowest looking 56 I've ever seen.
Get that kid in a fast post season mile where he's not leading and even out those splits, not sure he's got 5 more seconds but surely he can get closer to the promised land.
Carson also has sophomore star Sam Hansen to worry about too. Bro ran a 4:12 this year and was only 2nd to Aidan Antonio by a second in the rising star mile. 4:12 is a time that can already auto auto qualify you for state. I can honestly see Bouie, Aydon, Cook, and Sam going to state… and maybe Hedlund

Noonan has a very deceptive kick in that it doesn't look like he's sprinting but he's significantly lengthening his stride (like a cheetah!). It's like he just pulled on seven-leagues boot. I've a $100 that he will (unintentionally) break 4 flat at State.
