I don't claim sufficient subject matter expertise to evaluate the strength of the evidence presented in the paper, but it's important to be clear that the paper is explicitly about whether the virus was manipulated in a lab, not whether or not it leaked from a lab.
A well supported argument should stand on its own merits regardless of the authors or their motivations.

Yeah. The WIV had catalogs of natural viruses. A spillover from the lab could have been a totally natural virus and we would have no way to really distinguish from zoonotic transfer.
