Nedd's most recent Instagram story - he says he's running/walking 200 metre blocks due to knee issues. The stadium is 'kicking them off the track' at midday on Wednesday so he's trying to complete the 1000 miles by then. He's so deeply exhausted he can't even explain it.
I wish he'd pull the pin on this, it's just a suffer-fest. Is there anything to be gained by walking it in??
Did the Nedd team introduce the 'kicking them off the track' language, or has this just evolved naturally, so to speak? Reason for asking is that this is the sort of (potential) narrative framing that can change how I think about their marketing tactics.
No, I think his wording was innocuous. Just like saying, 'our time is up on the track'. And the producer of the daily live updates has been open all along that they don't have the track indefinitely and that there are other events booked.
Sure, but why would you not just run round the precisely measured track at its minimum distance (400m) and not start messing about with specific lane distances? I've done track ultras and its just 400m/lap no matter what lane you decide to run in.
Its also a nice round number so easy to keep count of.
This master lap nonsense just screams obfuscation, straight out of the playbook of all the other rubbish attempts by influencers at records.
...because he didn't set out to run 4010 laps of the track. He set out to run 1000 miles. Its 452m in lane 8. That would be 3549 laps - quite the difference. The track also banned him from running solely in lane 1. The issue wouldn't be as marked, track authority wise in lane 8, but would probably send you even madder and require someone to count every lap (but that should have happened)
The only issue I have with the master lap is that they're not updating distance and noting each PART of the master lap. I genuinely don't think it's a deliberate attempt to mislead, just a not very well thought through plan.
I genuinely think someone should let the company know if that lap was half baked as if Nedd stops at 1000 miles and they find that out, or someone says that afterwards, it would be pretty devastating. Can't deny the perseverance out there right now...
Why?
They are saying that they are measuring it electronically, in which case the software would automatically be updating every master lap, as well as being able to update every lap.
They have also had 11 days to know what is going on and listen to people that spoke of this
Ultras are so slow, and multi day ones much slower, that I was in a plane over the ocean east of Australia when I logged in to delete some reads when someone walked over mats. They don't need to even be there.
Perhaps the timing crew had the same idea as you and are not even on site.
That would be the logical thing to do. I do a lot of remote timing. But that doesn't make the error more likely at all.

I don't believe that SOPAC would have imposed that. There are thousands of laps of spked runners, why would they have an issue with a soft shoe shuffler that imparts zero damage when even a 100m sprint damages the track?
Its just an excuse for the obfuscation. They could easily have made lane 8 to a round quotient around the 450m mark
Rain coming down. Primetime in Aus for tiktokkers tuning in. Moving along pretty freely with run walks and pacer. Looking good for cameras. About to complete “masterlap” 112 in a similar time to 111. Gutsy running. Team has got him rolling… Will NB tick off 90km today? Or go for more into the night?
Definitely. Went int RT tent short of the mats on clockwise loop then came back out for counterclockwise laps.
He certainly missed the mats on the track.
There is a chance here that there is another timing mat extending into tents on right of screen (obscured from camera by the large set of tents).
This would mirror the setup to the left where you can see timing mats on an angle off the track under a tent with no walls.
I better give him benefit of the doubt… it is for charity afterall.
A brief live hand held camera shot showing completion of “masterlap” 112 confirms that there appears to be a timing mat off the track for NB to cross when completing clockwise “masterlaps”. So he has a timing mat across the track and two extensions off the track with blue cones marking his path to complete “masterlaps”. It’s a Y formation.
I actually just find it sad that there's so many people that have such a negatively outlook of life here.
The accusations the young bloke has had thrown at him have gone from cheating, stealing, disrespecting, racketeering, fraud, money laundering - this whole thread is nothing else but weird, and I genuinely feel sad, if nothing else that there's people out there that still need to bring people down.
I genuinely hope that you find you all find your peace and can be happy in your every day worlds x
What Nedd has achieved mentally, physically and in terms of fundraising is more than 99.9% of people will achieve in their lifetime. No-one can deny that.
But when you put yourself out there to the world and say you're going to break a world record that has stood for decades, and you're going to do it around a running track where you can live stream it to the world via TikTok, your marketing team can promote your business and personal profile, you can invite your celebrity friends along etc etc....
Of course there are going to be people that look at it negatively. This goes against everything ultra running stands for and maybe why it doesn't sit well with so many here.
Perhaps it represents an issue we face as a society which is much more complex than this.

I wholeheartedly agree with your last sentence, the poppy’s are tall.

Easy to say tall Poppy. Yiannis is the tallest of all the poppy's, and he was stubborn and divisive. Nobody wants to knock him down. Why shouldn't i apply rigorous scrutiny to someone taking on a grandiose, highly publicised running feat? I ask far more of myself, and fellow competitors.
Perhaps NB and the marketing team have missed an opportunity here to secure even broader support (and even bigger $$$ from oz corporations than 2 x $100000 donations thus far) by having everything in place for a genuine WR attempt.

It’s a great question Crikey, a great question to ask your therapist x

Yep that’s not a bad point and perhaps they probably have. Regardless there’s more money going to a place that needs it than there was this time last week, which I think is a good thing!
“Masterlap” 113 completed with a big chunk of pacing from Jess Fox seemingly making a difference (3 times AUS Olympic gold medalist in canoe slalom). Will NB be out for one more “master lap” tonight?

He's got a cult following, he doesn't need to set unachievable goals. He could do something challenging and realistic, and still get the same attention and donations.
