Truth hurts! I was proud of that 70 miles, though (walking).
True, that loan funded the Trans-Australia Footrace in 2001.

Jesse never said he is a great ultramarathoner. But he organized 5 Trans Continental Footraces. Nobody else has done that. And he has seen more top ultrarunners perform than you can imagine.

Hoping to do that race this winter. Will probably go for the 17 mile fun run. Went down a couple years ago but it was postponed when it got down to 10 degrees.
After Trans Colorado ‘92, our crew chief Sam took us to, I think?, Conway’s Big Top in Colorado Springs. “Burgers Big As A Plate” (1/2 pound, thin & well-done, Depression-style).
I was instructed to ask for the Triple (not on the menu). The ancient waitress said quietly, “I have never had anyone order that.” Insert preferred punchline.
I consulted the nearest Oklahoman, Russell Allison, on the accoutrements. Cheese & grilled onions & No fvcking way you can eat all that, he advised. His first multiday, obviously.
IAAF article posted by LRC mentions Camille was only 1 km behind the previous Championship Record for men. She also covered a sparkling, negative-split 12.07 kms the final hour.
Her low hour, puking twice I think, was 6 kms?
I’ve continued to research the question of marathon/ultras crossover ability.
It’s quite interesting. Thompson Magawana’s 2:43 50K WR still stands, I think. He died in ‘95, can’t find an obit. He was a 2:10 marathoner, 6th in Comrades. Another 2:08 marathoner on a comeback tried to better the mark a few years later & missed by 4 minutes. He stated his opinion that 2:08 speed would be needed in future. Both 50K & Two Oceans (56K) marks still stand.
The difficulty I find with crossing over between marathons & longer (Camille making it look extraordinarily easy): the marathon is just a super-long distance run, over 8 times the distance of a minimum long-distance run.
Trying to sprint past the marathon distance (in effect, a race that’s already so long) is much harder than it looks.
Right on time, Kara Goucher (who I personally am very glad is trying out the ultra scene) had mixed success @ TNF 50K, 3rd open/2nd master.
Speed is an advantage for longer distances, but it’s harder than it looks. My own PR of 4:31 for 50K is graded way below my 2:59 marathon, yet I’ve always preferred longer distances.
Additionally, the mass-marketing of marathons means far more competitors to help you make the pace. 50K, you’re on your own, especially at record pace.
If he were alive, I’m sure Thompson Magawana would tell you the same.
Kara Goucher is a great example that an retired top marathon runner won't just crush the trail ultras. They might or might not have some success but always keep in mind they are past their marathon careers. Their bodies are tired from all that training.
Checking out Olivier Leblond’s splits post-race. A sparkling series of gently negative splits moving from 19th (6hours) to 10th (12hours) to 3rd!!!!
Masterful tactics to podium! You’re a bad Mfer!
After a 2017 world-best 48-hour of the year, a mere day of running was no sweat, my dudes.
Camille Herron polls 4th in North American ultra runner of the year.
The main criticisms were that her recent 24-hour WR was only a WC, and she didn’t beat all the men there plus Kouros, too, ha ha.
Camille Herron is not the only good runner out there.
And most other good runners have a better finish vs DNF ratio than Herron.
But what matters most with these polls is, that Camille Herron has herself painted into a corner. She is bashing on a lot of publications and fans and then she wonders why nobody likes her.
True, although it’s honest criticism/analysis. I look mostly at the numbers, which are Mt. Rushmore-type in her case.
Camille is just struggling to be relevant entering Comrades Western States and UTMB next year all in the space of 3 months is just silly and it's a shame again she will take a WS spot and not finish.I suspect DNS/DNF in all 3.
Struggling to stay relevant? She just won another World title and smashed her own 24 hour World Record by 8k. Comrades is a warmup for her ha.

She probably gets her butt kicked at Comrades. Not sure if Gerda Steyn is running this year. But there will be some stiff competition. And that's not anything Camille Herron is good with. She only runs good if she can do her own thing at the front. If it doesn't go well, we will see her drop early again.
Let's not forget that Camille Herron has one of the highest DNF count in the ultrarunning world. Just 4 big ones last year. Lake Sonoma , Comrades after 43k, Western States after 55 miles, and ATY 48 hour race after 8 hours. She just finished 3 out of 8 races.
