I think, we need to start a group for shamed "fat-shamers".
This get's out of control.
I had a long period of my life where my mental health was terrible, and I lived on pretty much nothing but supermarket bread for nearly two years. Even though I ate fairly small portions of it, I came to resemble a loaf of cheap bread myself. Soft, doughy and pale. What I can say is this: I've no idea why or how, but the kind of carbs normally present in cheap food made me fat way, way above the odds for the total calories I was consuming. My diet is very good now, and a big part of that is I completely avoid anything with cheap flour and yeast. Things like pizza bases, bakery treats, you know the kinds of stuff. It could well be something else entirely. But I'm convinced cheap food is a big part of the obesity problem, and a huge fraction of cheap food contains exactly that kind of carbohydrate base.
One thing nobody's mentioned is people don't know how to cook anymore. More to the point, they don't know how to use a knife properly. Good kitchen knife skills make prepping healthy food much, much, much faster.
Two things seem to have changed drastically:
The concept of not eating between meals, this used to be the default.
Portion size, at some point people forgot that you don't need to eat a huge meal at every mealtime.
You’re on track. I read an article from the 60s that noted poor people are often fat, because cheap food MAKES you fat. The rich eat expensive, fresh food that’s suitable for their health (which varies somewhat among individuals).
BS story.
The issue is self control.
Exercise is a bigger factor than food anyway.
Recently an obituary about a man famous for having a car with 3 million miles was very instructive. He toured for years repping for the car company, and late in life noted that his car, which he drove for all those miles himself, was in far better condition than he was.

Stole Bill Burr's bit
I recently got back down to a weight that I have not been at for over 35 years when I ran in high school and I still regret the snacking I did just last night when I was not even hungry. I am currently down 60 lbs from my highest weight about 7 years ago and ran HM races this summer with PR times around 1:30. That is slow by the standard of many here but I could not run around my yard without running out of breath when playing with my children when they were little. I was also breathing heavy after going up just one flight of stairs at work.
That's a pretty cool story. Amidst the cynicism here (some very worthwhile and funny), it stands out, even if just momentarily.

LOL, he paints himself as a literate member of the American public. Turns out he's an uneducated boor.
