Radcliffe is 5'8" tall. Her converted weight at 5'3" is about 98 pounds.

Again with the "State Champion" nonsense. I believe I saw a post on here with a kid that ran 11:27 calling himself a state champion. I hate to break it to you, but 2:12, 4:52, and 10:35 isn't elite. If that is what your athlete was comfortable with and that was their goal, that's great. No one ever said you cannot run a 4:52 at 117 lbs. However, if that athlete told you that she wanted to qualify for the Olympic Trials, is your response then the same? Do you think she is going to run a 4:04 at 5'5" and 124 lbs or do you start having that conversation about expectations and sacrifice?

I love how everyone thinks their athlete is elite. It's always: "well my athlete weighed ____ and ran ____ so therefore weight doesn't matter." Again, that's horseshit. This thread has the name Katelyn Tuohy on it. She's not a 4:52 runner and we already know she has aspirations to make an Olympic team. If someone isn't having a conversation with her about what that means and what it will take, you better believe she will become frustrated and burn out. If you idiots are going to keep insisting that it's perfectly normal for a heavier female to run world lass distance times, then I'll say it again: YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. You are the ones that will cause young women to train themselves into the ground seeking faster times that they will NEVER attain. It's OK to say that 2:12, 4:52, and 10:35 is good, it's fast, it's acceptable and it's enough. What is not OK, is to tell that person that there is more, without explaining the cost. It's NOT OK to tell her she can be a world class athlete at 5'5" and 124 lbs regardless of what Allie Kieffer says! If you tell her that, she will start training and when the times don't drop or when they plateau, she will look around and see what everyone looks like that is running faster than her and she will stop eating. Everyone can't be an elite distance runner, stop telling them that they can.

You can't be an NFL lineman unless you weigh 300 pounds. That statement causes thousands of high school players to overeat and become unhealthy but it doesn't make it untrue. You can't be a world class marathoner unless you run 100 mpw. That statement causes runners to overtrain and get injured. The statement remains true though. A female can't be elite at 5'4" and weigh 125 pounds. Most weigh about 105 at that height. Houlihan is the heaviest at 115. Schweizer is 100 pounds. Huddle is 5'5" and 108.

rojo- it almost sounds like you are treating female development as an issue that needs to be 'solved.' the only thing that needs to be solved is how people react when a female naturally slows down when maturing. It happens, it's part of life. It's not really a crisis that needs alarmist posts by the owner of the worlds leading running forum.

To me it seems she might of been over raced this year. I feel like the top HS guys were smarter this year with less racing and running fast when it counted.

I just saw the Milesplit Live this week and they made comment about Liam Anderson (NXN Champ) and Nico Young (8:40 at Arcadia ) are shutting down their season after the State Championships. Liam is heading to Stanford with no reason to race and Nico only a Junior was getting ready for cross country.

Maybe Katelyn is just tired and needs a break and her coach decided to pull the plug. What's the big deal? I think these post season track meets can be a tipping point for most of these kids and there is no need. If HS track had a true national championships then it would be different. In cross country FL and NXN are more true national championships. For some reason Track isn't the same for distance kids.

My guess is that she raced too much in indoor. It’s tough to extend your track season deep into the summer after running too many races in the winter and spring.

I think you are wrong or at the very least to aggressive about it. At this age athletes shouldn't think about weight, they should train healthy and eat a lot, this weight gain right now is probably a function of body changing and it is healthy and needs to happen. But she's not going to be close to the same runner for a while and that's going to be the challenge, now is not the time to be saying hey you need to find a healthy weight range to be in, now is the time to let the body do what it needs to do and to stay as positive as possible. Likely body changes and timing due to her intense training are going to be worse than for some kids. I would also argue most seniors graduating with 2:12, 4:52 and 10:35 PRs who have trained smarter than her probably have a much better chance of future success than she does. I've argued this a lot of different places but unfortunately it is likely she isn't a mega talent like you all think, but just very talented girl who started training extremely hard.

I’d really love to see a shift in the way coaches, fans, teammates, and everyone else involved our sport work to change the narrative around how we talk about young female athletes. Let’s support them through their body changes, and keep running a positive part of their lives. Just because your body changed doesn’t mean running is over for you and you won’t ever get better again. Stop saying that and repeating it over and over again. Perhaps girls get burned out and walk away from the sport cause one one is supporting them and helping them through a slow down. Running progression is not linear. For the most part this thread is disgusting.

If I were her dad , I’d limit her cross country races and then go pro after NXN.

Thank you for saying this. I lost three friends to eating disorders. And there are many more. It has the highest mortality rate for any psychiatric disorder and I have also read that the mortality rate associated with anorexia is 12 times the mortality rate for all other causes put together for 15-24 year old girls. The statistics are horrifying and having spent time on those wards I've seen what it can do. Sometimes running is not the most important thing. How many people forge a career out of running? Is it really that important? And some of the one who didn't die were left with serious health problems.

It is sad.

You still don't get it. No one is saying to pull teenager girls aside and tell them to lose weight if they want to run fast. Run a 6 minute mile and be happy. Run a 25 minute 5K and be happy. But, DO NOT tell someone that wants to achieve the highest level that they can do so without weight AND nutrition being part of the equation. ANY elite female knows this, they just won't say it out loud because if they did, they would get exactly the same reaction and be accused of causing girls to have eating disorders.

I have a girl that's 5'4" and 125 lbs and she's been killing it running PRs of 4:56 & 10:49. You act as if I am suggesting that we have a discussion about losing weight to make her faster. That IS NOT what I am saying and NOT what happens. That's her body type and she's going to get into the school that she wants to and everyone is happy. Yeah, that's right, I hate to break it to you, but I coach HS girls. And, since I'm a female, a runner, a board certified endocrinologist and have actually been through it all, I speak to my athletes about this issue all the time. I also speak to them about menstruation, sex, contraception, boys, drugs, violence, rape, childbirth, movies, clothing, dating and a whole bunch of other stuff too. You WISH I was your daughters coach!

To tell a highly motivated girl that dropping a few pounds naturally during our build for state will greatly improve their chances, might sound horrible to you, but only if you buy into the fragile, melting girl bullshyte. The hype is that if you mention weight to a girl she is so mentally unstable that she will go spiraling into "disordered eating and potentially life-threatening health issues.'" Only a true dimwit would actually believe that. You have been so programmed to believe this nonsense. You clearly have no idea what girls talk to each other about. If you do have daughters, they clearly don't trust you enough to open up about these matters with you. Apparently boys can handle putting weight on for football, taking it off for wrestling, being told to hit the gym because they are scrawny, being told to lose weight because they are heavy but girls are unstable anorexia time bombs ready to go off at the mere mention of the word "weight." It's stupid, sexist and simply untrue.

And as a disclaimer: I am in no way minimizing the issue of eating disorders. Eating disorders are complex and to suggest that any single event would be a trigger shows a deep ignorance. Eating disorders deal with obsession, weight, appearance, body image, hormones and there is now compelling evidence to show that genetic factors contribute to a predisposition for eating disorders.

Don't sell your daughters short, outfit them with the right tools for success. As with most things in life, how you say it is as or more important than what you say. Girls are badass and a lot tougher than you think.
