I have to say, the guitar solo is not such a big part in the music i listen to most fervently. Proto-punk and Grunge downplayed the guitar solo and instead incorporated it into the melodic structure of the song. The stuff that comes to mind is Ron Asheton and James Williamson on the Stooges early work, esp. that on the Fun house album.
