No. Scotland is the home country. That country is within a political union which is the UK.

You will see Scotland vests at the Commonwealth games were all the UK nations compete individually but not here were only the union is represented.

In fact there was even a vote in 2014 about whether Scotland would become an independent country and the Scottish people decided against it. So it turns out the home country is represented as we can see from the Briton Laura Muir winning yesterday.

You didn't start with the comments on intergovernmentalism vs supranationalism at all. You just made some vague and irrelevant statements about culture and identity. And if the EU was just about trade the few people would have an issue with it. It would be ASEAN or Mercosur and would be relatively unimportant to the European continent.

? The UK is a sovereign State not a country. Scotland is a country within that State - as you even pointed out yourself! Therefore the home nation / country of Scotland is not represented.

It's really not that difficult to understand.

Scotland is not sovereign. This is the European Championships, so Scotland isn’t recognized and for all intents and purposes doesn’t exist. Something that doesn’t exist receives no representation.

it has nothing to do with whether or not the UK is a sovereign country and even less to do with anything the people vote for.

Scotland is not affiliated to European Athletics; Great Britain is. therefore, Scottish athletes cannot compete in European Championships while British athletes can.

similarly, in the Olympic Games, Great Britain is affiliated to the International Olympic Committe, has its own Olympic Committee and therefore gets to compete in the Olympic Games. Scotland is not affiliated, does not have an Olympic Committee and therefore does not compete.

Indeed, where to start. It's so painfully ironic that some people who strongly identify with the European identity are crying about some African people in "their" countries. There is soooo much I could write about this but for now let's just bring up European colonialism and imperialism over hundreds of years where tiny Europe has forced its own identities on the rest of the world so that a large part of the world has lost it's own identity and has been replaced by names, languages, histories, systems of economics, systems of belief, systems of law, standards of beauty....this could go on literally forever....

Just a tiny thing to think about out of billions upon billions: Africa has thousands, THOUSANDS of its own languages and dialects but Europe forced its half a dozen or so languages on this huge continent, with rich, deep complex histories and identities, not to mention the rest of the world....

There's nothing anthropology majors enjoy more than studying exotic and unmeddled cultures at an arms length distance, and they're pissed someone brought progress to the African continent for a limited time.

Go study the natives on Sentinel island.

It's a thought experiment.

1) What would African continent look like today if they had been living isolated from the rest of the world for the entire time after the first people migrated away from Africa?

2) Sentinel island is host to a small population of indigenous people whom outsiders are forbidden to contact. You might find their hunter gatherer ways interesting, but you'll also find they're not too friendly.

There are problems with this question whirling around my head. Immediately what is commonly referred to as "African" people who I would personally think of as the Originals, the first people or even melanted people (some people say Aboriginals, Asiatic [this would include the Sentinelese, Australian Aboriginals and other melanted people throughout North East Africa (the "Middle East" and "Arabian" peninsula), south Asia, southeast Asia and the Pacific], Nubian, Ethiopian, etc) have the whole planet as their home so they are not restricted to the continent of Africa, as you show with your mention of the Sentinelese.

I know them; they are perfect.

When the US faced SLEXIT we didn't just give the leaving countries a hard time, we went to war with them and made them remain.

Within the US, although fairly homogeneous, there is always a strong rooting interest by state and region.

This is stronger in Europe because the states have unique languages and cultures.

Europe can see what has happened in the US, one big combined culture where you really can hardly tell what city you are in as language, stores, roads, buildings, and food all look the same. While Europe wants to enjoy the benefits of one customs market, no border crossing and 1 currency, they jealously guard their languages and cultures to prevent them from disappearing into a US of Europe.
