Relax. No one outside of a rounding error statistically gives a shite about running. If an American had won, they would have used her name because she was American, not because she was a runner. If a Uraguayan had won, it’d be “winner”. For most Americans, running is a weird hobby and people don’t even know how long a marathon is.

Anyone who even raises the issue of racism with that original headline is a racist or someone who can turn a molehill into a mountain, needlessly. Sometimes "The sky is blue" simply means that the cloudless sky is of a lovely blue color, not that global industrialization has caused the atmospheric spectral light to unnaturally display in a certain wavelength band.

When they win, the implication is its the result of superior genetics but when an American like Flanagan wins they are heralded for their extreme dedication and hard work.

You can't say it's racist by simply inferring all of that. But it's absolute bs they didn't put her name. They certainly don't seem to want to do our sport any favors.

Agreed. It's not racist. It's just unfortunate and weak journalism. She may not be a household name, but she's a rock star in the world of running. Her name should have absolutely been in the headline.

The title in question is from the special Marathon section of the paper. Was there another article in the A section or Sports with her name in the title? If so, maybe that's part of the reasoning for the way that article was titled.

Wow, this really is gutter journalism by Jonathan Gault. Has anyone here actually opened that image and looked at the full page?
"Mary Keitany of Kenya..." leads the strapline directly below the image. And it's not even the only image headlined that way! Just look:-

Then "Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia..." leads the strapline.
THEN (the big one!)

- picture of Flanagan below that -

They did EXACTLY THE SAME styling across all these images including FLANAGAN!

We have to stop looking for racism all the time. It’s tiresome. I didn’t even know who Keitany was and I frequent letsrun. The picture and header was cool and the fact running is getting any type of space in a major newspaper is better than it deserves (since no one gives a sh*t)
Are the people who cried foul about this headline ever going to come back and eat crow for being completely wrong about the 'hidden agenda' of Gault and the NYT, or are they going to make accusations and then disappear when reality doesn't conform to their conspiracy nonsense?
