It was a fantastic and memorable race, even for those who are not U.S. track fans. Completely unexpected, and a meet record to boot.

Probably a troll, but the event isn't weak anymore... The top 3 in the field have run 8:52, 8:58 (with a stop to tie her shoe), and 9:00 in the last year. The Americans had run 9:07 and 9:19.

You are not very bright. The women's steeple record will be 8:40 within 5 years. IAAF points are borderline meaningless to the intelligent.

The improvment of frerich is clearly off the chart...she is coming from nowhere!

PR by 16sec and running only 6sec slower than her PB on 3000m from last month!

It's absurd because Coburn was an Olympic medalist a year ago. It was a surprise, but to say it was on par with Billy Mills isn't true, in my opinion. One could even have safely said before the race that Coburn was an outside favorite for gold. And yes, I know that she got worked over by the Africans earlier in the outdoor season.

So Kirui, who shouldn't have been in the final, finishes way back in 10th, but not before taking down her own teammate (and two others). Kenyans getting it done.

Frerichs winning would have been Billy Mills. Coburn winning was like Centro last year.

Exactly. IAAF are based on what has already been done, not what the event should be done in.

Frerichs and Quigley have won the NCAA steeplechase. So not exactly coming from no where. Frerichs really dominated the event in college so her talent was there. Now, she's had a full season of professional training and it's paying off.

i didn't bother to look at the differences in height of barriers until now but it was shockingly low !!!

it is very favored to tall women such as western gals

but this also means the short Kenyan women will need to improve their technique & can't just expect to amble across low barriers

apparently it's 36" for men v 30" for women

however, average men v women height in west is 5'10 v 5'4

therefore huge discrepancy in ratios between 36"/5'10 & 30"/5'4 if someone can be bothered to do relative ratios

to convert women's times with higher barriers is not easy at all but all things considered, my experience in estimating indicates for small changes, it's likely the slowing woud be ~ cubic root of increased barrier

if women had barriers same proportion to men at 36"/5'10, a 8'00.00 clocking woud slow to maybe

~ 8'00.00 * ( 36"/5'10 divided by 30"/5'4 )^(1/3) =

~ 8'15.0

if women's barriers were proportionate height to that of men, the times woud be at least 15s slower for top gals...

above average performances, but not in the same league as running for a week on the mill and breaking the world record,
