She didn't consciously choose to step on the line. That'd mean she meant to set herself up for a DQ. She did however accidentally step on the line and did get a DQ.

Time penalty seems weird to me....just require a rail then athletes can run on the rail all they want if they wish.

Multiple reasons why the whole situation is stupid.

1. No measurable advantage gained.

2. No intent to gain advantage.

DQ infractions should involve one or the other or both.

Additionally, no other sport requires you to FORFEIT the contest because of the most minor rules infraction. You go over the line in gymnastics, you get docked points, you don't get DQ'd. In tennis, you lose a point, not the match. Etc. A football team doesn't lose a game if a lineman jumps offsides.

Additionally, this was a qualifying heat. The infraction played absolutely zero role in her placing top 3. The officials should have leeway to determine that the infraction was of no consequence so what's the harm and advancing her. Hell, sometimes they advance someone to final who got knocked down and didn't place high enough.

Additionally, the way this water pit was laid out, the pack spreads out for the pit, then collapses back to lane one at the corner, where Quigley stepped on the line. There may not have been contact, but there were people collapsing down on her. She moved to the inside in response.

A sane system would allow the head referee to say "no intent, no effect on the race = no penalty."

One thing against Quigley is that Jager is her teammate and he just barely survived a DQ scare last night. She should have been extra aware.

You realize you can't prove 2, right? I don't think she tried to gain an advantage, but we can't prove that she didn't.Gotta live with the fact that sometimes we have to impose black and white rules on our grey world. She probably didn't try to cheat, but she very clearly broke a very clear rule. Why shouldn't she be disqualified?

She chose to run as far inside as possible to try to get an advantage and took it too far

What happened at multiple different points during the race did not cause Farah to go off the track at that particular instant in time. I certainly could be missing something, but when I rewatched the moment at 50% speed, I don't see a shove immediately preceding the step out.

This is well put. A sport in which there is no discretion allowed with respect to the rules is a bit foolish. In any case, how can touching part of the line--apparently not going over the whole line)--on one step, one time constitute an advantage? This seems beyond frivolous. I wonder if it's not helpful to compare the situation to floor exercise in gymnastics, where if a competitor steps on the line there is a mandatory point deduction, not disqualification.

So say there was a rail, if the athlete runs inside of it once during a non-sprint race I still don't think they should be DQ'ed

Solinsky was having a pity party. He would NOT have been disqualified.

Farah was clipped slightly, not pushed. It takes very little to move a 115 pound guy in mid-air a few inches left or right.

Yep, just went back and watched a few more times to confirm. Nothing that could be construed as a shove occurs. It is 100% a trip, not a shove, and I can't tell for sure whether he was tripped from behind or whether he just stumbled on his own.

You are so stupid it is unbelievable. She stepped on the curve wise ass.

The Kenyan absolutely forced Quigley down on the line.
