So messed up. They should give him a lane in the 200 semis as compensation. But even that wouldn't be enough. They totally screwed him over with that. All he needed to do was run for 43-44 seconds. Didn't need to touch anyone or anything.

great, the official hotel is their stated probable cause of gastric issues among athletes, of which vomiting is a main symptom, further food poisoning is not contagious, unless you french kiss at the wrong moment, and of course the doctor on site's diagnosis reflects probable food poisoning at their official hotel.

Makwala's coach bullshitted on the BBC though saying he had been sick once. The IAAF doctor said he came into the medical room voluntarily and had been being sick since 10pm the previous night (or the last 10 hours can't exactly remember this bit). This is what they told the on-site doctors. They determined this was a virus based on his symptoms.

That said they have no jurisdiction to ban him from the stadium or even the race? Public Health England do not either they just give guidance and advise.

What if Bolt or Mo? Of course they'd have been allowed to run.

I believe that the guy got sick, ....i bet a lot there is no test data ... i believe Mak wanted something for his stomach so he could run the next day, not to get thrown out .... i bet a bit of cash, he had food poisoning ... i bet the farm this would never happen to Mo, Bolt, in one billion years.... i bet a ton that, while some at the IAAF are telling the truth, many others are not, no matter what, the various statements need to be documented and lined up.

this will give a window into the soul of the IAAF, or lack there of.

Botswana will win gold in the 4x4, and then they need to show the IAAF up after the race, and finally not come to the medal ceremony

how about that official hotel ..... their incubator of the stomach flu bug or food poisoning..... did they cause the problem, did they violate protocol? did they create the problem in the first place?

time to audit their processes...

the bottom line is ... you don't want to stay at their hotel and you definitely don't want to go anywhere near their doctors.

Does it? Seems like the media would rather present the likes of Bolt and Farah as unbeatable and standalone, here in the UK at least. However I do agree that something shifty is up judging by what I've read so far.

OK, I am going to out myself as a LetsRun fan to anyone who knows me, but then again if they are reading this they are on LetsRun, too.

I am a public health official, and this isn't medical advice to anyone, but...

For the IAAF to so heavily lean their PR messaging on this recommendation is pretty weak in my humble opinion. The decision comes down to event medical staff (in this case the IAAF Medical Delegate), with public health authorities providing a recommendation but rarely a legal order in a scenario like this.

It is extremely unlikely that Public Health England put a formal order on the IAAF or anyone else to isolate/quarantine/exclude Makwala.

That would be an absolutely extraordinary measure, more likely to be seen in a recalcitrant case of multi-drug resistant TB than garden-variety Norwalk.

Yet, here is the wording from the IAAF press release on the topic:

"As per UK health regulations, it was requested that he be quarantined in his room for 48 hours, a period which ends at 14:00hrs tomorrow (9 Aug).

Implying a regulatory legal requirement in this case is quite deceptive. ("It was requested" strikes me as especially slimy here; he was most likely "requested" by the IAAF, but the sentence implies that UK health officials requested it.)

If the IAAF wants to say "We're not going to go against the advice of Public Health England" that is fine. The IAAF may even wish that public health would place an order, just so they could say 'Look! We had no choice!" But they did have a choice. It undermines the perception of legitimacy in genuine public health orders (e.g. What you'd see in an Ebola case) to suggest that Public Health England is out enforcing "regulations" on a guy who vomited yesterday and wants to run one lap today.
