Update: Big 10 1500 champ placed in next round of 1500 without even running a race!! Do two wrongs make a right?

This is what I was going to say - if they determined after the fact that he should have been given a chance to race (as it seems is the case by them putting him in the next round), make him prove it. Maybe have him run a 1500 by himself today (Friday), and hit the qualifying time for the next round. It could theoretically be an easier run than his heat would have been (depending on how race/splits played out) - but he would also have a day less rest.

Obviously not a perfect solution, but I think this (combined with some sort of fine) would prevent there from being a rash of "oops I forgot my jersey" qualifying attempts.

In HS we have a 10 min check out rule, maybe they could have allowed 10 minutes to get his singlet.

So in your opinion, the proper way to handle a runner who shows up without a bib is to automatically let them through to the next round?

Hahaha if I race at regionals, I'm gonna lock my bib up and throw away the key. Free advancement yaaaayyy!!!

If Kiprotich ends up being one of the 12 qualifiers are they going to let #13 go to Eugene, then? Since #13 would have been #12 if a fresh kid hadn't been allowed into his semi?

If he makes the 12-man final in Eugene will they let 13 in? Since he'd have run 2 races to that point instead of everyone else's 3?

I hadn't heard about the uniform rule change. I liked the fact that teams could wear different uniforms but I understand their logic in that decision.

You can get your hip numbers by checking in with your bib several hours before the start. The officials do not recheck you again to see if you have your bib/jersey; it's on you to bring those to the start line after you were already checked in. Racers were allowed to wear warm ups down to the start line which is why it was not caught earlier.

I agree they should've let him race, but now it simply isn't fair. Plenty of fast kids didn't advance because its tactical and rough. Now, only because he forgot his bib in the tent, he gets to run the race on fresh legs? No way

1. Sucks he forgot his jersey and bib in the team area away from the stadium

2. Its on him as the athlete to remember his stuff.

3. Too bad his coaches didn't catch it earlier and throw him a jersey

4. As a coach ALWAYS bring extra singlets, shorts and have em handy at the start in case something like this happens

5. A lot of athletes have been in similar situations

6. All you kids still racing- DOUBLE CHECK YOUR UNIFORM, SPIKES, BIB, HIP NUMBERS, BE DRESSED AND READY 10 MINUTES BEFORE START

7. COACHES- reminder before leaving campus, reminder before leaving hotel, reminder getting off bus, reminder before warm up, pay attention to what's happening

Don't think he should be able to race without the bib. To those people who say that he should have been able to race and then they can sort it out later, what happens if he had won the race? If they later disqualify him it takes all of the recognition away from the actual winner. That's not fair.

And to those who say he should race because it's just a minor issue, I disagree with that as well. I used to officiate races myself and as soon as you have gray areas in the rules everyone starts biching and moaning about every little thing. Come prepared to race!

That is typically for field events not running events. It would be impossible to keep a race on schedule if everyone could just "check out" for 10 minutes before their race.

Exactly...gray area....next time it'll only be a semi-final, etc. Officials need to follow the rules. If they are allowed to interpret them then each race may operate differently, depending on the officials, and how flexible they want to be. Them there will be no standards whatsoever. Bad idea.

So you have to wear a chip, a bib number, a hip number, and the absolute correct matching team uniform just to run a race and not get disqualified?

They should just hand every runner a thin crop top tank top with a number on it to wear. Lane 1 gets #1 etc.

Your argument is based on the (il)logic that if one does not like a decision, the solution to the initial mistake must necessarily be acceptable. This is stupid.

A DQ seems overly punitive to me. This does not mean that I am somehow required to consider letting him through without running to be the right decision.
