Keith Urban is pretty damn impressive to watch.
Dave Grohl's bass pedal rythmn is unmatched?? Honestly, what are you talking about. It's a fitting drum part, but there is absolutely nothing difficult about any part of that song.
He's a solid player for sure. You're just hearing something that isn't there in Smell Like Teen Spirit.
Toby Keith.
Go buy the Nirvana box set and listen to the Smells like Teen Spirit demo on CD #2. Its track 10. You can clearly here him hitting the bass pedal 7 times in 2 beats. I've never heard any drummer pull that off without a double bass pedal. Just my two cents.
angus young is greatest to me but i know he isn't the best ever
I'll have to take a listen. Anything's possible.
Supposedly Malmsteen developed his phenominal pick speed when he was a kid and tried to play along with cassettes of rock and roll that he was playing on a tape machine that ran the tape too fast.
Hendrix's quote about Kath (of Chicago) was "man, he blows me away".
Nobody has mentioned Andres Segovia yet. He elevated the guitar to a concert instrument. Elliot Fisk was one of his students.
Too many styles to name just one, but if we're talking rock music, here's my 1st and 2nd team All-Star bands:
1st Team:
VOCALS: Robert Plant
GUITAR: Jimi Hendrix
BASS: John Entwistle
DRUMS: John Bonham
(Sadly, 3 of 4 are no longer with us)
2nd Team:
VOCALS: Paul Rogers
GUITAR: Carlos Santana
BASS: Chris Squire
DRUMS: Neil Peart
As far as guitar players, guys like Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duanne Allman, Neal Schon, David Gilmour, Robert Cray, etc. are all deserving based both on technical skill and creativity. But Jimmy Page is the greatest rock guitar songwriter who ever lived. Listen to the Zep catalog if you're not sure.
This has been voted on many time by the great guitar players themselves.
And the undisputed champion is Joe Satriani.
Jerry Garcia
A close call between Bin Done and B. Fore

Apparently you have to floss with guitar strings to be the greatest guitarist.
Most of the people on here disregard the BODY OF WORK that Keith Richards has contributed - literally hundreds on hundreds of very tight rock and blues songs that he not only helped to write but also to re-interpret through a drug and alcohol haze. Without Keith we'd have that sappy Beatles trash defining the 60s.
All these flossing virtuosos that you mention are pretty good, but Keith makes it sound so NATURAL and EFFORTLESS to be great.

No, listen to the Zep Catalog compared to the Stones Catalog if you're not sure.
When I was growing up the radio stations in the area used to have a Stones vs. Zepp weekend shootout for a number of years - non-stop Zepp vs. Stones for 3 days and fans would call in with comments, kudos, etc between songs.
Year after year the Stones won and it pissed me off because I really liked Zep and thought it was an unfair comparison (Zep 8-9 albums) vs. Stones 40 or so albums back then. But as I listened to the Stones I realized that their range and creative output far outstripped Zeppelin especially if you stepped out of the buzz. Studio Zepp is a great thing but studio Stones are also.
I saw Zep and Stones live several times. Zep = sloppy and uneven when live. Stones = tight and consistent. At least in my experience.

True and a great point..
This thread should be called "greatest rock guitarist ever," which is hardly the same thing as "greatest guitarist ever." If you want to designate the "greatest guitarist ever" on technical merits then you need to turn to classical and jazz....Segovia, Fisk, Methaney, Schofield, McGlaughlin, and plenty more. There's just no comparison. I say this as a classical and rock guitarist and a pretty big rock fan.
If we're not talking technical merits, then the thread should be called "favorite guitarist."
Sometimes people quote certain guitarists like Hendrix and VanHalen as saying things about other guitarists like "they blow me away". Just because and artist says that about another artist, doesn't mean it's true. They are just trying to be respectful. Now, on the other hand, if someone like Malmsteen said that some other guitarist blew him away, that would be saying something. Cause Malmsteen is one arrogant bastard. He said VanHalen was a hack.
With all due respect, greatest live band ever= grateful dead. So stop talking silliness.
