Any maze riddle is dumb as you don't actually need any "tool", map etc. to get out, just patience. The way to escape any maze is just pick a side, left or right, and keep following that side and you will eventually get out. You will end up back tracking, but stick to the side and you will get out. So he doesn't need to pick any box, he just needs to leave the room, pick a side and follow it until he's out.
This. I also cannot take this riddle serious because of this blatant shortcoming.
Even though FBer sort of cheated to get to 100 posts, I will post the answer.
According to the rules of the riddle, the only way to determine what is under a box is to lift the box. HOWEVER, it does not say that he has to lift the box off the table. The man lifts the whole table, lifting each box, and consequently determines what is under each box (because that is a rule directly written into the premise of the riddle).
You may be thinking, "but lifting a box guarantees finding a tool or death, right?" Not quite, he could also "find nothing" based on the rules of the riddle upon box lifting. He does in fact lift the box with nothing (along with every other box) and "finds nothing" because he didn't lift any box off the table. The phrasing is constructed in a way that allows for this misdirection, but also stays internally consistent.
So now he has determined what is under each box, and can actually acquire all 3 tools for escape. It doesn't actually matter what they are, but let's say that they are a map, a rope, and a shovel. He then uses these tools to escape.
The "trick" to the riddle is to think laterally, and not so literally about "lifting a box." Lift the TABLE ITSELF to lift the boxes. The rules of the riddle state that lifting the box is how you can determine what is under a box, but you don't necessarily have to reveal its contents (which may be certain death because the boxes have rattlesnakes underneath them).
Oh. Wow. I shoulda listened to those claiming lamer-troll.
So, not a Google interview puzzle. at. all.
LDOPA. Just typing it to lock it into my brain to ignore all future posts.
Thanks!

Lifting the box IS the only way to determine what's underneath it. However, lifting the box OFF THE TABLE isn't the only way to determine what's underneath it.

I have ten boxes on a table. Under each box is an object. Please explain how lifting the table, which will technically raise each box higher, will help anybody determine exactly what is under each of those ten boxes?

LOL. I called it on the first page.

It is DIRECTLY INCLUDED in the premise of the riddle that lifting a box will allow the man to determine what is under the box. It is up to the puzzle solver the think of a way to lift the box without revealing its contents.

Except me. I was right.
You guys just seem a little bitter that you couldn't figure out the riddle.
It's okay, I will provide opportunities to try again on a new riddle in the future.

This falls under the cheating clause. Enjoy your death by minotaur.
FYI I accidentally went to sleep and forgot to respond to this thread last night.
This falls under "no changing it this time." Clearly by "cheating" you meant using dishonest means to look inside the boxes, not leaving the room. If you had meant leaving the room, you should have said so. You don't get to clarify your riddle after someone answers it. I win.
Besides, I am an experienced and cunning spearman and more than a match for any minotaur.

Nope, that makes no sense. You also clearly do not understand what a metaphor is. You have created a solution whereby the answer makes no logical sense and requires a lack of scientific reason. Somehow raising the boxes higher - boxes which could not be seen into - will become magically transparent. What material do you believe these boxes were made out of, unicorn horn?
This is not a riddle, it was a childish misuse of language together with an answer requiring a departure from reality.
LDOPA is also a liar. He claims he heard this riddle recently. Of course he didn't. No one else than this ludicrous being could come up with such a stupid riddle.

"Lifting a box is the only way to determine what is under the box, and also guarantees the man will either die, receive the tool for escape, or find nothing in the event he lifts that one particular box."
By lifting the table he lifted 6 death boxes, 3 tool boxes and 1 empty box. Since he lifted 6 death boxes he was guaranteed to die 6 times...
Idiot.
He is only guaranteed death if he lifts those boxes off the table, though. Just lifting them doesn't mean he reveal their contents, unless he lifts them off the table.
The real riddle is why so many letsrunners fall for this kind of stuff. This site should change it's byline to, "LetsRun, Where your dreams of being trolled hard become reality"the real solution wrote:

LDOPA, we are proud to offer you the Troll of the Month award!
Congratulations! 10/10! Outstanding!
The riddle is incredibly stupid, but his language is at least consistent.
"Or find nothing in the event he lifts that one particular box" means that if he lifts all the boxes, the other things won't happen since he did lift that one particular box.
what a dumb "solution"
thinking of the table as a data table on a frozen spreadsheet was the best answer
