It is obvious that Rupp is taking on Salazar's persona more-and-more. Under such a long-term relationship that seems inevitable. Rupp needs to break free of the personality handcuffs Salazar has had on him for years.

the reason any of you criticize his interviews is to find a flaw in him because you are jealous of his running talents.
even if you could run as fast as him, I doubt you would be able to stand up and give an elaborate interview.
his job is to race. period. not give media interviews. you are lucky he gives any at all, as the other poster said, there is nothing in his contract that says he is required to give interviews.
he is tired after races. he is too tired to talk to media personnel. and he doesn't have to if he doesn't want to. I feel he is bending over backwards to be nice and friendly to the rest of the running community who is so far below his level.

I don't get this. There are some minor irritations on both ends but this interview is hardly worth getting worked up about. Putting aside opinions on the matter, this thread illustrates the disconnect between the passionate interest in all things distance running and a gross inability to market the sport. There are 100+ back-and-forth posts here analyzing off-putting mannerisms under the microscope. This should not generate a buzz, and yet, legitimate thought is put into the posts.
How do we solve this? What other method is available to make the sport interesting? How do we harness the quest for analysis, and channel it into making running a better sport? Does Rupp have real trouble with on-the-spot interviews? Does the public want to know more about him? Do reporters need to change their approach, write questions for Rupp, and have him respond in writing because he better expresses himself in that format?
Rupp obviously has great issues with interviews, that others don't have.
The issue is not the reporters. I'm not fond of some questions, for example inept questions about drugs, but Rupp is the ONLY person who chooses how he responds, no one else, and not the people conducting the interviews. Rupp has the choice, and can answer in any way that he wishes. He doesn't have to glare and act like an idiot. He can still be friendly and just answer in a friendly manner.
What I think he should do is to work on this, and come up with better responses to the questions, and yes write them down. For example look at his last interview, and compare his answers with those given by Garrett and Garcia, who were much more friendly, genuine and informative. Regardless the interviews, working on his responses would be good for his character and development as a person.
He's got some anger issues, obviously, the way he glares at the camera, and the way he acts bored and disgruntled, but he shouldn't take this out on the running public that is interested and supportive of his efforts and would like to know more about him and his plans. He needs to learn to be more friendly, and to seek out opportunities to connect in a friendly manner with more people.

If this was Schumacher, or any other coach, no one would say anything. Salazar shows up for 15 seconds in a 3 and a half minute interview. He's obviously waiting for Galen. That seems like a logical thing for a coach to do after a race. This idea that he was stalking or engaging in some hate stare-down is comical.
I have no idea why Rupp was more standoffish with Nikeman's questions. They did come machine gun fire and jumped around a lot, but they were decent questions.
However, I'd also agree that if we held NBA, NFL, etc. players to the same interview standards Rupp is being held too, 90% of the players and coaches would not meet the standards.
I wish I had the patience to read through this thread. You guys have probably had a lot of fun.

I watched the interview after I read so many of the comments here.
I was quite curious to see what I had read about. I did not see anything close to Rupp being dismissive or rude. He tried to smile a few times and engage the interviewer. He did not crack a joke or do anything to entertain the watcher, but if that is the standard or what people expect, I think all the criticism of Rupp has less to do about him, but those who criticize him.
After all, the interviewer jams a microphone in his face while he is trying to get somewhere and we all expect Rupp to instantly be dynamic and profound? He may have been talking to Alberto about the race and then this interview interrupts him and demands an on-the-spot dialogue.
Remember, he is an athlete and a young man still - I don't think he has even turned 30. Give him a break.

yes i hope to see all american athletes succeed regardless of my opinions about any of their faults. i get no more excited about rupp winning a race than someone like shannon rowbury or ashton eaton winning their event.
i don't hate foreign athletes. i see them as great competitors and i have some (like asbel kiprop) who i always wish to see do well. if it was him vs. centro in a 1500 i'd like to see centro win, but he's not at kiprop's level so i cheer for kiprop to beat guys like kipsang and mahkloufi.
