I don't why we think whites can't sprint. Pietro Mennea had the 200m for almost 17 years. Even the great Carl Lewis couldn't crack that nut.

A questionable record (run at altitude and -- according to many who saw the race -- with multiple violations) that was broken nearly 20 years and that has been lowered by 1/2 a second is your "proof" that whites can sprint at the very top levels.

"oh I am white, I can't sprint so I'll do distance"... is the wrong thought process.

Nobody thinks like that. Kids who are fast know they are and don't run 100 meters slower than they are capable due to some weird inferiority complex.

It's not speculation without proof. She was a member of a team that systematically doped ALL of its athletes. The fact that the U.S.S.R. destroyed or concealed most of its archives doesn't gainsay this fact. You probably think that we should withhold judgment concerning whether water is wet, because there hasn't been a study to show it.

Thanks for that clip of Lewis's 19.75 from 1983 US trials. I hadn't seen a clip of that probably in decades and I remembered him celebrating early but that was ludicrous how far away from the line he was when he brought his arms up! 19.55 maybe, who knows? Maybe if you had a full clip of the race and tried to get short segments and compare them to the finish, you could see.

Prandini's got plenty of top end speed, as her 10.92 earlier in the year was not based on her start. She just ran 22.20 celebrating before the finish and might well run sub 22 next year, as well as 10.80s. Remember that her improvement curve has been steep at Oregon since red-shirting a year. And as for the redshirting, that is not unusual at all in college running and not too unusual even in track. How many upper-echelon programs in XC run their freshmen?

So, she's not over-aged. Because of the injuries in hs and college, there's still room for improvement here.

JP's starts are average. If she can improve, who knows how fast she can run.

Whites don't go out for track because they have so many other options for success in our society. So it is rare to see one following their talent into sprints track. Why work so hard like that when easier other options exist? The talent is there though.

You are absolutely right coach. Unlike most coaches you see through the stereotypes! Teens especially are so concerned with fitting in. So they gravitate towards what they traditionally fit in not what they may have talent for. Hard to break through.

Oregon has the best sprint coach in the Country honestly Oregon might be able to win the NCAA Championship next year with only 3 sprinters Prandini,Todd and Washington. I think Oregon returns all but 6 points next year from NCAA this year. Could Oregon 4 by 1 team next year of Sant,Todd,Washington and Prandini set the NCAA record for the 4 by 1 I think so if they can ever get the baton passes down. GO DUCKS BABY OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Its actually a pretty big deal. If you noticed, only one "white" man has gone under 10 seconds. Sprints are a "black" dominated event. Not segregation but celebration. She's broken the stigma that white people cant sprint. She's now the US 200m champion.

Didn't Adam Gemilli also do it, along with Lemaitre (both are also sub 20), and Kilty is close, as was Borzov (10 flat? or 10.02?)? It's just a question of getting the #'s of serious participants, doing the work with good coaches, staying healthy, and having the belief that it is possible. Take a look at youth track participation and you'll see why this is the way it is in this country.
