ches runs how ches wants. he has more titles than nova and the others. why he is king. it was stupid to give the race like he did. had he tt'd it all out, no kickers would have been there. no one would have been there. nice to see another team get a wheel too. oregon is too good frankly.

I'd posit that "Top-7 in the world" satisfactorily fits the bill of "right up there with the best in the world."

Now, Ches could be great, but I think he's too young at this point (as evident by today). Still think it was a d-bag move to say that he "let" his teammate win, but I'm trying to remain unbiased as possible for this crap thread about a wholly crap race. It's like a reality show: some of the worst TV still results in great ratings for people who only care about those things.

What I don't believe has been mentioned is that high school Cheserek would almost certainly have gone out in 1:55 in this scenario. I'm guessing there were efforts by Powell and company to temper that, which was probably wise given Lalang's presence in every major race Cheserek ran last year - as good as Cheserek was, he wasn't going to run the legs off of a 13:00 guy as a frosh. Now he has learned, like many top dogs before him, that being the "best" runner in a field is thrown out the window when the first 1200 is run at the pace of a decent high school dual meet.

I'd probably agree with you if you named the "prick." OF course I haven't met them all, I've met most of them, and had dinner with a lot of them, it just happened that we all ended up at the same restaurant after a big meet. That actually happens a lot, and for anyone who doesn't know, if you go to a big meet a lot of people, runners included, end up at the same restaurants.

It's a lot easier to meet almost any USA elite than you would think, it's far easier than say, meeting an NFL player.

The only ones that I know for sure are pricks, are no longer with the team and were not running today.

Let's still realize that these are young people, and their are not fully formed as individuals yet.

Do you really think it is fair of a former US record holder in his 60's to be calling college kids "pricks" on the internet. Last I checked, Oregon, and Hayward Field was pretty good to Malmo.

It's a sport, for chrissakes, don't take it so personally.

Most of us probably pulled some ahole moves in college. I look back and remember some things that almost all my teammates did at one time. Now we're old farts who've all apologized to each other at some point where needed and hugged it out (as the kids say), or whatever.

Life's too short for this sht, and I just think someone of Malmo's accomplishments and age should hold himself to a higher standard.

As a former American record holder, which is a hell of an achievement, he still has the opportunity to comport himself at a higher level.

Can you imagine Jim Ryun doing what Malmo has done on these boards?

Which gets at a larger problem, the behavior allowed on this board over the years has chased away many wonderful former elites in the sport, as well as many former great fans.

Is our sport so wealthy with fans and support that we can even support a chat board like this tolerating a prick who calls ipso facto kids "pricks" ???

Hey, I agree that the move was a dumb dumb dumb dumb choice, there's just no need to use profane name calling at any college team. Call a tactic or a move dumb, or dirty or whatever.

In the end it doesn't really matter, traffic on threads on this board has severely declined over the past 7 years, although the brojo's will still site the traffic on their home page etc., and "proof" that things haven't way-y-y- died down here.

The threads for big meets and races are far smaller than 7-8 years ago.

This place doesn't really matter any more.

Face facts: Oregon, and your "King", is hardly the empathetic protagonist in this story. In fact, they've done everything in their power to become the despised antagonist of college sports. They are the nouveau riche rapper who flaunts his bling and flouts the rules. There is a good reason why Oregon is Darth Vader and Nova is Luke Skywalker. The Ducks will remain that way until they change their act. No more throat-slitting and no more disrespecting their competition. That's not a difficult thing to understand, is it?

Bad Wigins, Malmo and A Duck all on this page. All we need is ventolin^3 to show up and the Last Supper can begin. The mention of Jim Ryun by A Duck should have triggered the house alarm at vent's place.

For those who don't remember, Malmo wasn't exactly deferential to his alma mater until they came through in the 4*800 at Penn. One of them (Ryan Foster???) even mentioned Malmo in the interview after the race. Malmo's just willing to post the plain truth. It hurts most of the time, but he's damn consistent.

There is a tradition of this kind of running in Oregon. I've read about a 4xmile relay between Bowerman's UO team and Lydiard's club. The two teams had traded the world record back and forth and had arranged a race to settle the matter (actually I think this was the second such meeting). For some reason Oregon's fastest miler, Dyrol Burleson, ends up slotted into the third leg against New Zealand's slowest runner, John Davies. Burleson gets the baton with a significant lead which he immediately squanders preferring to draft on Davies and blow him away in a sprint finish. He does this but doesn't regain enough of a lead for Oregon to hold off the Peter Snell.

Plenty. There were hundreds of races that didn't have Oregon in them and tens of thousands of fans who didn't care one bit about Oregon. What, are they going to stop recruiting on the east coast? Because one athlete ran like an ass once and a few dozen people on the internet said he did? Oregon needs Penn more than Penn needs Oregon.

Earth to Rojo: well over half of the fans at Penn Relays have no interest whatsoever in the college distance relays. They're Jamaican, from all over the eastern seaboard (I love cruising down I 95 Saturday morning and seeing all the jamaican colors in the cars), and they're there for the high school relays and USA vs the World. But mostly the high school relays. Half the stadium empties out after the high school boys championship of america 4 x 400 meters. The college 4 x 4 championship is an afterthought for the Jamaican contingent. Honestly, it's the Jamiacans that make Penn Relays the marquee event (attendance over 40 000 each year), certainly not the college men's 4 x 1 mile.

Seriously Robert? If Oregon can't handle the critics for running like babies than they should stay home. No meet "needs" Oregon. Penn was fine before they came and it will be fine without them.

Problem is Ches is too stupid to think for himself out there and can only follow coaches instructions to a T.

I'm sure he does whatever his tutors tell him to do on his homework as well.

Can't fault Ches. A young runner trying to win a close race. Ches may be a king, but Stahr and the Hoyas were awesome in '87. That's the way of greatness in the mile anchor. Critics,remember Oregon won the DMR the day before with Ches, and the Ducks have been a top program for decades. Penn Relays will be fine with or without Oregon. Not sure where the program is getting its direction from these days. Hope some of the comments attributed to the coaches aren't true.

This is by far the dumbest thing I have ever read. Is it wrong to consider yourself superior as an athlete? I invite you to watch any race that Villanova runs, especially cross country. Their team has always shown zero respect or sportsmanship. They even go so far as talking in the middle of the race towards the four mile mark. Anybody complaining? No. Congrats to Villanova for winning this title but Ches does NOT need to apologize to anybody but his teammates.

well said too. I didn't think the race was that bad. I don't know the history and previous comments by the runners. I figured most of the runners were tired from the previous day so were taking it easy so to speak.

Yet the runners in the 80s would go all out in every race. The runners of today "save it" for the big day. What's better? Who is to say? Wasn't it Coe that said he ran every race like it was his last time on the track? You don't see that anymore.

Yet, you can't fault the winner for being tactical. He knew his kick was the best.

I was entertained by the race. I don't think anyone did anything wrong. It's just how it played out.

People wouldn't be criticizing ches like this if Oregon had won, right?

But he didn't, did he ? You know what people would really rave about ? If he had a run a mere 4:00 flat mile and broke the collegiate record. I'm sure his teammates would have preferred that to - you know, breaking a record held by Rupp, Centro, Biwot and Wheating. That would have been worth raving about. His teammates will never get a shot to break that record again And remember after the DMR the day before when Ches said that he only ran fast enough to win because he had to come back the next day and run hard in the 4Xmile ? Really ? He "saved himself" to run a 4:14 ?

Never mind those guys. I bet Prefontaine was rolling in his grave yesterday. I thought it was ironic seeing Chez wearing the Pre jersey and running like a complete () and going against everything Pre stood for in giving it all you had and not "sacrificing the gift". After the 10k and Stanford and the 4x1mile, it appears that Chez and this new crop of runners/coaches don't quite fit the Oregon mold.
