Again, you're stopping at 143 section 1. You need to deal with 143 sections 7-10 and understand how a judge or arbiter would interpret.

And no judge or arbiter is going to say, oh well, since athletes weren't DQd for removing shirts on a victory lap, rules 7-10 are negated and athletes don't have to wear visible bib numbers during their competition.

If I was the Spanish guy, I'd refuse to take the medal. He was the 4th best on the day.

Maybe the athletes will do the right thing and redistribute the medals amongst themselves. Shawn Crawford gave up his silver medal at the Olympics in the 200m when he finished 4th but two runners ahead of him were disqualified for minor lane violations after at least one protest. The greedy federations who protested still got to tally medals to their haul at the Olympics but at least one of the athletes showed some class.

P Radcliffe stopped and took a crap in the middle of the road in one of her marathons, televised on the internet, and she wasn't dq'd.

If taking one's shirt off during a race is to be a violation in the future, then it needs to be specified in the rules.

Let's think twice about rules in general. What is their purpose? Are they there to help us and make events proceed more smoothly and fairly, or are they there to be obeyed just so we can bust people and keep them in line?

If someone commits a lane infraction, impedes another runner, false starts, etc - DQs for those types of things at least make sense because they affect the outcome of a race, or fundamentally alter the conditions of a race so that everybody doesn't have the same chance of winning.

Taking a shirt off didn't affect anybody. He still ran 3000m and completed all the hurling required. I don't even think of it as taunting, and even if it was, how about we start DQing everybody that raises their arms in victory at the finish line, or sprinters who strut around after winning?

Crossfit? You mean the one sport where actually everybody is on steroïds, is looking like Donald Duck when running and can't lift what sprinters/throwers lift? Those guys?

Have to agree with this. In a way Spain is being unsportsmanlike in weaseling their way into a medal in this manner. You (IAAF) want to enforce the rule so anally? Then suspend him from the next competition, but DON'T artificially change the outcome of an event where it's clear who the winner of the actual athletic endeavor was.

Are you kidding me? That would be freaking awesome! (as long as it wasn't Caster Semenya, at least). Track and field's popularity would grow ten-fold overnight if prospective viewers thought that there was a chance of seeing a woman celebrate down the homestretch by going topless.
