Meb's 2:08+ isn't pedestrian early pacing for Boston. Most early mile pacing at Boston is around 5:00/mile pace. Sometimes a tad slower. Elites come around the 1/2 way point around 1:05-1:06. From what I recall, the elites usually make their moves either right before Heartbreak Hill or right after. Meb was going around 4:52. At that level in Boston, it is a big difference. Especially in the early going.

Seriously, check the mile splits for the "chase" pack during Meb's "surge". They deliberately ran absurdly slow. Not reasonably conservatively. Absurdly slowly.

Sorry, no it makes no sense. Meb was an afterthought in this race. If any American should have won it would have been Hall. You mean to tell me that Asics and Nike thought it was a good idea to have a Sketchers athlete win? None of what you're saying makes sense. No one and I mean no one thought Meb would PR today yet you think it was a conspiracy that he won? The dude ran a PR, which wasn't very likely but hardly something anyone could control other than himself. He also ran it by himself. Here's what happened. Meb knew that he didn't stand a chance so he tried to break away early in hopes that no one would take him seriously and he would sneak away w a victory. Well that's exactly what happened. Everyone thought that he's come back to them but he didn't. It's not that hard to figure out. To think otherwise is just foolish.

1) Meb is good. Very good. He came in 4th AT THE LATEST OLYMPICS. It is crazy to think that nobody would take him seriously.

2) One does not have to pick the winner of the race in the first place in order to fix it. One merely has to pay off the elite Africans (not difficult to do) to let ANY American go and then hope that at least one American has a good day.

we've all been had, the fix was in and it wasn't even that good, I'll give some credit though, the finish and the last 3 miles had some pretty good directing. LOL...and the 2nd place guy also blew the cover, now that was funny, he only one take and he had to make it count!

and this particular fix was about the BOSTON STRONG and all extra media attention, fans, etc etc.......and they knew only a couple of running guru's will ever know the difference, of course MEB fans will be totally blind!

I think you haven't seen all that many elite marathons. You're clearly thinking of the races with rabbits and clearly established pacing groups, where everybody in the field knows exactly what will happen for the first 30k or so. Boston doesn't have rabbits, so it is much more tactical - sort of like the Olympics. It usually makes sense to let someone go when you think they are probably not a threat (and really, did you really expect Meb to PR today?), because if you're one of the big players and you go with them and nobody else does, you're isolated.

Another way of looking at it is, Chebet was ALMOST really smart today. If he had caught Meb - which might well have happened, but it just didn't quite today - he would have looked like he was wise to let the early front-runner go and reel him in late.

This is very Lance Armstrong-esque.
