There is no motivation for the other women to run a 10,000 in Portland at this time. And is there any indication that some of them expressed an interested and were declined an entry?

slight difference between a race being postponed/cancelled due to dangerous weather conditions like lightning, and postponing it because the conditions are not perfect. That difference seems to be getting lost here.

You're right--by wanting to assure that his athletes are running a 10000 in temps lower than 80, Salazar is seeking "perfect conditions." Really?? Isn't it rather that Salazar is attempting to avoid terrible conditions for a 10000? Indeed, I'm fairly certain that a couple of years ago Malmo posted a list of the fastest 10000s ever run, with the temps during the race. If memory serves, something like 90% (or higher) were run in temps lower than 70, and most in the low 60s. Remember: Salazar is scheduling the race!!! What is the principle involved that would require him to schedule it on one day rather than another. From the very first announcement it was July 15 UNLESS the conditions looked poor. And I'd say a 10000 for time in 80 degree temps, with relatively high humidity, are poor.

I do feel for Hastings but she needed to beat one of the two and she had the A. Goucher I have no sympathy for as she is clearly not in the shape of the other 4 and placed 5!

If Salazar wants to do this the fair way, he needs to:

1. Only use female pacers who can run 31:45, because if they used MALE pacers who can run 31:45 that would be an unfair advantage that only Nike has

2. Join an already existing track meet to do this, and in Europe, because it's not fair to non-Nike athletes that they have a track close to their home base to run a meet on

3. Schedule it on a really hot day, even though the day does not matter, because not everyone gets the advantage of racing in cool weather

You have pretty well summed it up: Saladbar has determined that it is only fair if Alberto's athletes run only in a place in Europe where they have to be subjected to sleeping in strange hotels, eating different food, and to which they have to incur jet lag, and run in really crappy weather, and only with pacers who are very elite international women who can run faster than 31:45.

All you have to do is get a lot of people to sign up for the 10,000 m races so Salazar won't be able to use that obscure rule to his advantage. This may be why he is waffling on the exact date. How many people will commit to traveling to a meet if they don't have a firm date? This way he keeps the entries controlled, and low turnout. Trickery>>>>

Why should the other women from Des Moines be invited however? They did not place in the top 3.

If their was one women in the top from AlSal's group and another from a different group...I would be inclined to agree with you, though I also think it is reasonable the gal from another group could set up a similar race on her own home track.

If this is what Salazar is doing, THAT is the sad commentary. What's wrong with signing up to run in a fast meet?

As has been pointed out here and I have pointed out in another thread, this is just a normal meet now, and anyone here with a decent mark can enter. It is listed as a men's and women's 10000s (separate). And if they get enough entries it will for sure be a women's only 10000 (they have to follow the USATF rules for an official meet).

According to Weather Undergound, is is going to be quite warm, with temperatures of 72 degrees predicted at 8 PM.

Hastings and Goucher may win this contest.
