"Tie breaker" - Natosha Rogers is the furthest thing from a "leach". She probably led more laps than just about any runner in the country this year. Do you think that just MAYBE having to use up a hell of a lot of energy to get back in the race (after being tripped thru no fault of her own) affected how she had to run the race. I mean I realize you teach things to "elite" runners so use your head on this one.
Simpler solution. If you aren't going to run the event in the Olympics don't run the trials. There were enough runners clogging up the track.
The race itself? S##t happens.
Agree, on both counts. I lost a lot of respect for Flanagan. She shouldn't have run the race.

This thread is a joke and many of the posters in it are spineless. One person cannot by themselves slow down a group of 20 people without their permission. Rogers, Williams, Erdmann....they sealed their own fate.
Shalane was well-intentioned. She had no specific reason to run this event until Lisa's problem arose. She suddenly felt useful and jumped in front "Kenyan team-style". This stuff happens a lot in championship racing and while it was somewhat tragic for Rogers, it was all legit, as was Rupp helping Ritz in the previous race.

Actually I wish this thread could just disappear - Rogers is NOT complaining about a single thing. She is very happy with her progression.

I agree with this completely, and feel Shalane should be DQ'd from competing for this year due to this.
Also it points out the major problem of picking teams by politics, i.e. arbitrary times, vs their 1-2-3 placings at the trials. The placings should be the ONLY criteria for making the team.
Times are fine for qualification for the trials, and should be the only criteria for qualifying for the trials - never politics. But for making the team, in the single event, the 1-2-3 placings need to be the ONLY criteria. The IAAF needs to consider this seriously and make sure the A standards are not to stringent for the competitors, especially the women, who were not allowed to compete for many years, and only in recent years have this opportunity - so there needs to be a lot of concessions for them and major back bending to make sure no one is left of teams who DESERVES TO BE THERE!
OK to use your logic, Rupp should have be banned from the last Olympic team because he took a spot away from another runner in the 5K heats and that runner might have placed third and made the team. Do you see how simple minded this line of thought is? It is a race, if you want to run a certain time you have to run at that pace. You can't blame others.

Well, this is where we differ. Using that logic, why didn't Goucher and Davila run it? I'm sure Shalane picked up some extra money for it, especially with Uhl making the team, but I don't see the nobility in it. That said, the excuses for Rogers are just lame. She and a few others could've put the hammer down. She didn't make excuses for herself, and there's no guarantee she would've hit the standard anyway. She had a huge PR as it was.

Idiot, do you even know what bush league means? Amateurish. That was anything BUT amateurish. Shalane is an experienced, professional athlete with Championship racing experience, and her move was intelligent. It was bush league for Notosha and the others not to go around her and keep going. They knew they had to hit the A standard to have a hope of making the team. Lesson learned.

That is not using the same logic. While it's appealing to top athletes to enter national championships, it's not obligatory. And if financial incentives are involved, which they are, how can anyone possibly castigate a pro runner for making money doing the thing they do professionally? Should Flanagan et al. give up money as a courtesy to those seeking to run the 10K in London because her presence the other night was unruly?
This is such bullshit. She had the Q-time, she had every right to run and run any way she wanted to, short of hatchet-kicking others in the field.

The other runners were running on pace to achieve the standard at the point where she blocked the pack and caused it to slow down.
Therefore I feel there should be a rule of legitimate intention, where if a runner qualifies in more than one event and then withdraws from one of them, or participates in a second event that materially affects it's outcome, both of which Flanagan did, that the athlete shall no longer be entitled to compete in either event at the subsequent championship meet.
In this instance, because of the foul play, I feel that both Flanagan and Uhl should be disqualified from competing in London, in either the 10,000m or the marathon, and the 4th placing runners with the A standard shall be entitled to fill their positions. I hope, in the interest of fair play, that this shall be done immediately.

Saul I was quoting others, my response is at the bottom. I most definitely don't agree that Shalane should be disqualified!!!!!!
There was no reason for the four women in the race to push for the "A" standard since they already had it....had the pacec been hot and 1 0f the 4 girls not finished out of top 3 they would be left off the the team. Therefore, anyone that did not have the "A" standard should have been up front pushing the pace but they did not! The kid from A & M ran a nice race..she now has something to work for in the future and hopefully she nails down her standard well in advance...
