Jacob Simmons out of Sturgis, SD is currently a freshman and has ran a 428, and that was last year at the state meet... so he ran 428 as an 8th grader...

Freshman Marco Pompilj just ran 4:17.61 today in New York.
The list that "watchout" provided is accurate and the times listed for Elijah Armstrong as well. My son logan Wetzel finished second to Elijah at the New Balance Indoor National with a 4:20 in the Freshman mile. Logan has also run a 4:04 1500 mtr, a 1:54 800 mtr and 51.2 400 mtr this year, but in line with another comment from another poster, I know that he and many of these very good freshman runners are no where near to a physical maturity level yet, so ranking them now has little relevance. What they do in the next 2-3 years will be important.

How's Garrett running this year?
How about Tyler Tate?
It's the old Pat Castagno adage. Train them like pros and burn them out by the time they hit college. It was really nice to see Castagno have Tate running hurt last year and now look how he's run this year. Don't worry Garrett you're next.
Blasphemer
I actually won state as a freshman in Texas 4A with times of 4:20 in 1600 and 9:21 in 3200. This was in 1984. So many good runners out there... I miss it!
9:35 is a great time for 3200 for a true freshman. How encouraging.
I ran 9:24 for two miles in the 70's. It was the fastest in the state then, but I believed I was relatively slow compared to the incomparable Eric Hulst, whose 9:04 two mile time floored me. Reading of his death imbued me with genuine sadness, as if a golden era in high school track and field in the US had in some way eclipsed.
I went on to run faster and enjoyed a Div. 1 career, but in hindsight the focus in 9th grade should be on having fun, training consistently but not too heavily, and importantly, starting a focus on a proper diet and lifestyle. The latter habits can really make a difference on and off the track. I know some may disagree with the lack of heavy training in high school, but most of the kids in the sport lead a suburban existence, and sense of balance seems to augur well for the high capacity training required at the college level and beyond.
9:35??!!!??? Not even close, check out DJ Principe of la salle 9:15
toasted - 9th grade doesn't count, really. 9:35 is a great start. Also, one can't really discern the maturity of a 9th grader. I was 5"2, 105 pounds as a 9th grader (ended up 5"10, 132). I recall Doug Padilla running "only" 9:17 for two miles in high school. The long term picture is what counts.
Watchout's list is an interesting thing to look at. It would be informative to see how these 35 have fared in the 3 years since they were promising freshmen.
You guys realize this thread was posted in 2012 right?
Regardless, click on the guys mile split page link posted on the first page and you will see this kid now runs 4:05/8:59. Not a bad turn out...

My list wasn't season-ending (looks like it was posted at the end of April), but still would be interesting to see I agree. I'll look at giving an update on those guys later.

Obviously, a few standouts on this list: Elijah Armstrong at #1, Tanner Anderson at #7, Connor Olson at #13, Conner Mantz at #15, Matthew Maton at #18, John Dressel at #27 have all most definitely lived up to the promise they showed and then some. Sukhi Khosla, who didn't quite make the cut (don't know where he was at... in an earlier version of the list he was barely off the top 25, so I'm guessing probably closer to 40th), has improved greatly as well, as have guys like Thomas Pollard/Alex Ostberg/Jesse Reiser/Mike Brannigan/Grant Fisher/Trevor Reinhart/Levi Thomet/etc.
Strong, strong class of juniors this year.
