But the thing that you are missing is that sub-1:05 fitness doesn't put him anywhere close to potentially qualifying (which is his stated goal). He is going to have to get much, much, much, much, much more fit. He can't just throw in a few workouts. He has to get RADICALLY fitter. And he is very injury prone, so yeah, tempo runs could injure Goucher.

Yes, as I said, he ran with a watch!!!!!!!!!!!!! You were the one saying he didn't run with a watch. I don't care about his interview as I never believed it anyways. Why would he say that he had to run 4:57 pace and not run with a watch or listen to splits,...but then run as he felt. Horse hockey, total horse hockey mates.

Ran how he felt? He ran evenly as hard as he could, period. Yes he looked at his watch and yes he was figuring out splits to keep on target. If it was easy for him, why didn't he run faster? Because he couldn't. Adam did not time it that close on purpose and he can look like however after hitting the finish line. Trust me, the man was hurting and worked to break 1:05 and he earned it.

This has to be considered a very successful result, as he completed the first step to representing US in 2012 OG. He can now start to increase intensity as part of full, comitted marathon preparation.

Remember his dream is to compete at the same OG in the same event as his wife. How cool is that! No doubt he is also driven by envy!

Looking at the pictures form the race, he looks like he has put on a lot of muscle in his upper body since last running. Anyone else notice this? I realize that he has always been pretty muscular for a distance runner, but I'm not sure the gain bodes well for the marathon. While I wish him luck, my guess is that he either: (A) gets injured prior to the trials as he attempts the necessary increase to mileage (100 mpw is not a lot of volume relative to most elites) and intensity or (B) stays at his current level of intensity to stay healthy, bonks at mile 20 and pulls a DNF. It's a lot to ask for from a 36 year old.

On a side note, if you were 36, unemployed for 2+ years and had not yet started looking for a long-term job/career, would you be worried about your future? Perhaps he has a deal with Nike for gainful employment once he retires.

You don't read very well. I didn't say tempo runs would injure Goucher and suggested he do more of that style of "up-tempo" running, less hard track and interval stuff, which is why he gets injured. He can double up with the alter-G to get his miles in if he can't handle more than 100-110 with mainly up-tempo running (not every day). If he increases his mileage, he's going to need to incorporate some down weeks, no doubt about it.

It seems like it's you who failed to read and comprehend. Nothing that was noted in the post you responded to was faster than LT. You said that running LT, AT, and marathon pace (aka "crap" according to you) would somehow cause him injury. Nobody said "hard track and interval stuff." For you and the other guy, he has speed as well as endurance and now needs to combine the two. Long repeats on the road, increasing length tempo runs, fast finish long runs, etc. You know, "crap" that any marathoner with high aspirations does. Race pace for the marathon is what is most important from now until the OT. An increased amount of slow mileage isn't going to cut it. Sixteen weeks or so is not a lot of time for someone to get ready for the most competitive marathon he's ever run, especially when it's his very first one. Simulating the specific demands of the marathon is a lot more important than what would amount to a whole lot more jogging.

Nobody said anything about jogging either. The problem with Goucher is he tends to run his LT stuff too hard, which gets him injured. That's my point. I agree with the rest. I also think he can handle more mileage in his lead-up, as long as he balances it with down weeks and alter-G.
