People didnt even know what or how far a mile was a few centuries ago. Why would they run all out for exactly one mile and how could you be so certain they would break 4.

Yes they did. Read the thread.
This is the dumbest thing ever, accurate clocks/timing devices weren't even around until the early 20th century.
If you knew history then you would have know that the mile was first created shortly before 1770. Which still appiles to a few centuries ago.....dusche. 2006 minus a few centuries thats three at least so 2006-3xx=1706 or lower.
This thread is about a mile being in foru minutes in circa 1770. I'm not sure if it happend but I believed it is possible and I wrote a lot about it earlier in the thread - using the name UK Historian.
Okay Mr. Historian most people didn't even know the year during that time, how many actually knew how long a mile was that had it actually marked. Plus I was responding to a message that claimed people have been running sub 4 miles for thousands of years. Therefore you should have been reading the thread....dusche.
I can assure that people in the 18th century were well aware what year it was. Further, Britain is full of milestones - some are accurately measured, some are quite vague.
Milestones originated in 1740 still short of a few centuries ago or 1706. Yes this applies to the main topic but once again I was responding to bcrunnerman. Which in turn you claimed they did have a sense of a mile a few centuries ago which they did not.
Not everyone knew exactly how far a mile was in 1700 and actually a surprising number of people today don't have a clue either. The guys running the distance or organizing the races surely took the time to learn though.
Oh, great, now we have 2 threads on a topic that's every bit as real as skydiving unicorns. Well--why couldn't a unicorn skydive?!?
