I could run 230s as workouts, which I did quite often back in the early 80s. However, I never got the 2:19:04 that I needed to qualify for the Trials. So....230 is far away from 220 or whatever the standard is for 2012.
I'll second this. I won an ultra, a 40 miler, running it at 6:30 pace and as a lark. My best marathon time remains 2:27. Everyone has a line. For me it was around 5:25. Slower than that was easy. Faster than that was not. I could run up to a half at under that pace, but then... And I regularly got 6000+ miles in a year. So I had good endurance. Dean's background as a sub-elite ultra runner will not be enough. Not even close.
Aside from that, though, I'd like to see evidence that Dean really said this. Apologies if I missed it somewhere. If he did, then this, for him, is like the moment when McCarthy went after the pentagon for harboring communists. He will have officially jumped the shark and will have to look for real work in a bad economy. I guess it will be another example of the dialectic at work....
