As I recall, Al graduated from OU in 1980, and Henry graduated from WSU in 1981. I don't know when Henry's last NCAA race was, but he was thirty years old when he beat Al in that 10,000-meter race, and Al -- although only 23 -- was at the very peak of his professional running career, having won his second NYC marathon the previous fall in 2:08+, and being just weeks away from winning Boston in a course-record time. Al was also running the best times of his life at shorter distances and international cross-country as well. So the comments by "the obvious . . . " suggesting that Henry had some big advantage over Al in that race because of their age difference upon enrollment in college six years earlier are just nonsense.
I don't know why you think that Al's "demise" was in any way related to trying to keep up with Henry in college. Al's best running came after he graduated from OU; he ran terrifically for the next couple of years thereafter, and really only started looking a little shaky when -- much to the surprise of many -- he couldn't keep up with Decastella, Lopes, and Rodolfo Gomez (whom he had outkicked in the 1982 NYC marathon) in the 1983 Rotterdam Marathon. I think it was that race, more than any other (including the so-called "duel in the sun" at Boston 1982), that really shook Al and perhaps led to some bad choices. Until that race, Al was being treated in his home country as the king of marathoning, even though Decastella was arguably turning in more impressive performances against stronger competition elsewhere (Fukuoka 1981, Commonwealth Games 1982). Rotterdam was a major dose of reality.

Funny little known, make that *unknown*, story about Henry. In late Summer 1987, Henry was living in my house, but I was going to Rome for the W.C.'s. He was pretty fit, having run two 1:04 half-marathons at 35 years old. To keep him occupied while I was gone I got him a job (which lasted one or two days) at the outdoor ornament store made famous by the band of the same name. . . Fountains of Wayne.
Thanks Malmo, you saved me a bunch of time. He also beat Illie Floroiu of Romania that summer 13:15.5 to 13:16.7 a very good race concidering Floroiu ran the second fastest 5K of 1978.
My memories about Hackensack New Jersey was when I was running 12 miles in Prison.Then this guy in prison became my coach,but later stold my nice Reebok shoe, when was in the showers.I thought he was my friend, he wanted $75 and I will get my shoe back.So I call Drew Eckmen to bring money.
Drew do you remember that story moving me from public jail to a celeberty prison? Fill the lines for these people to understand the story or let them buy the book.

I remember when Henry ran his 13:08.4 WR, to crush Dick Quax's 13:12.9 record. Quite a stunning performance in such a low key meet. Quax had broken the old record by .1 the year before. Track & Field News called Quax in NZ to give him the news, and Quax replied, "No!!!! This ruins everything!" It was quite a mental leap to comprehend sub 13:10 at that point.
When I trained in the hills in Giligil,Kenya for 3 years and WSU.I had extented muscle endurances,unlike those guys who train,who train in low altitude and no hill lung training.
My cardioviscular lung muscle were breathing smooth in and out without a struggle.I was having fun running in the race no challenge,just go after the lock and nail the time I wanted.

--Use the proper Boolean equations on google and you will eventually, indeed, find an article stating that Chaplin found Henry while he was in college in Kenya (through alumni contacts cos Chaplin said he did not have the budget to afford going to Kenya himself). If memory serves, it was in a small local Pullman paper. If the reporter got it wrong, it is not my doing. What awed us all Henry, was of course, how fast you ran, but also how EASY and smooth it seemed it was for you.
They should make a movie of your life and running!

Just wondering if Salazar and Rono were only rivals or shared some kind of camraderie? I mean, if Nike was also on the list of exploiters of Rono in his prime, and even refused to help him when he was down and out, maybe Salazar in his role at Nike could do something for him today to make amends.
Malmo, as a friend of Henry's (or at least someone who respects and cares about him) I can just imagine the feelings you must harbor towards people like Chaplin for what they did to him. I always wonder what the real story was when he was at WSU, and how he slipped into the cycle of alcoholism and exploitation. It really seems like Chaplin is no different from the criminals heading Athletics Kenya today, and just like them (invited to present medals at the World Champs), he has retained all his privileges. And Rono lost everything. Just doesn't seem right.
He lost almost everything. He has not lost the respect of us that saw him run and competed against him, even those he spanked us hard. As bad as it seems Rono had it at WSU he may not have run if it were not for the USA college system. Remember the Africans did not run in 1976 Olymics and some African nation did not run in the 1980 Olymics. The USA college system gave them a chance to compete in those dark political years. Yes the Africans were older, but I remember it helped the young USA runner who competed against them. I remember reading that Salazar and Chapa felt they benifeted by competing against the older Africans.

Henry was in jail for the false 'bank robbery' charges. I was trying to get him out. I got a call from someone at the jail telling me to send $75 to so-and-so's account and Henry's stolen shoes would be returned. This guy was making himself out to be a jail official, but was a prisoner who wanted the money put into his personal account. Who knew there were bank accounts in jail?
I've mentioned before that I somewhat recently found a cassette tape of Henry and my family out for dinner at a local mexican restaraunt. He's telling stories with mariachi music and people asking for more chips in the background. If I remember, Henry says that he arrived in Pullman very late on a Thursday night. After a few hours sleep he was in class on Friday morning, not being able to understand what the teacher was saying.
Regarding being drunk the night before the WR. Henry told me, again out to dinner(Chinese this time), that he and Peter Koech split a pitcher of beer and had a shot of whiskey each on the afternoon of the race. I don't remember if it was the 13:08 or the 13:06.
Going way back in this post, I believe someone said that Henry couldn't possibly have been 15 pounds overweight for the 10,000 in Eugene. Take a look, if you can find it, at the pictures of the race in Nike's old 'Running' magazine. His belly is hanging over his waistband. Definitely 15 pounds up on racing weight. I was always pissed off that, on the cover of that magazine, the picture of the race has a clear shot of Salazar and the inside contents plastered over Henry. You can barely see him.

I am going to Cincinnati,Ohio and I need radio talk show to talk about the past races and my comeback in life.
It is alot better in addition of using my fingers typing and missing some valuable words that can help our understanding in the running world.
There is some gaps that it needs to be fill in our running communication and radio talk show will close these gaps.
I am running half-marathon on Sunday.

Drew, you do realize that Peter Koech didn't come to WSU until the fall of 1981 don't you? In fact, his name doesn't show up in ANY international races in 1981, none, zero, nada.
