RE: Does Galen Rupp really have a shot at winning a medal in Berlin?

I guess what we need to keep in mind is that even though 25 guys from both Kenya and Ethiopia can kick Rupp's ass, only 3 or 4 from each team will be there. This completely changes the equation and allows a reasonable person to say that Rupp will be in the the "hunt" for a medal.

I'd prefer to see Rupp run 26:58 and get 8th than to see him 27:13 in a slow race and get 4th. Of course there's always the miraculous 500 meter "Salazar" kick that could completely prove me wrong.

I like Rupp because he didn't achieve 98% of his potential in high school. He's shown steady growth, and even he's genetically disadvantaged (not East African), he's definitely fun to watch.

i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that even if he makes it to the finals, he'll have the slowest p.r. of the race going into it. it's possible he'll have his best time ever, but i can't see him kicking with the top guys. his final 1600 at ncaas was impressive but don't you think the top dudes in the world could do that as well? especially if you factor in the very slow race leading up to it. a medal is not possible...it's fun to dream cause i'm a rupp fan, too.

Here's what I think. If the race is fast rupp will probably run 27:18-27:23 and finish a respectufl 8th or seventh. Kenenisa bekele will win it around 27:02-27:06 and people like gregg bell will start lashing out once again posting under a different name and start screaming drug cheat drug cheat ignoring the fact that rupp ran a hell of a race. And where in the hell are you getting 26:58 from dude? For all you Rupp stans out ther HE WILL NOT BREAK 27 MIN IN A TACTIC CHAMPIOSHIPE STYLE RACE. To answer the exact question posted, yes, Rupp really does have a shot at winning a medal if he shows up as fit and race-ready mentally as he was at NCAA's. Rupp is a racer now, not just a fast runner. He covered every move with the appropriate response at NC's and made both finals look easy - man among boys, trotting across the line after long fast finishes. Did the same in indoors and at X-C Nats. In sum, he has not really been tested, so we don't know how fast he is ready to go or what pace he can hold and kick from.

Competition at worlds will obviously be a whole lot tougher, but anyone who can close in 4:00 and make it look that easy is a threat to medal. I am not saying he is a shoo-in for a medal, not at all. But in the past year, at least to me, he began to put together the whole package and move much closer to becoming a complete racer. He made a quantum leap in his ability to close out races long and hard.

So, yes, he has a shot at a medal and I will not be at all shocked if he nabs one.

Nope. No chance. Just seen the oslo 5000m race and I seriously doubt rupp would have been in the mix with them on the last lap. He's running against genetic gifted africans not some college YOUNG guys.

Oslo race doesn't settle anything, I just watched the Oslo 5k, too. If Rupp is in it, he doesn't wait until the last lap so he can watch Bekele run his usual 53.5 to win it. He goes with 5 or 6 laps left and cranks out a bunch of 59's or 60's to string them out. They were only running 64's and 65's til 63.7 on next to last lap. Might be different race if a move is made with 5 or 6 laps to go. People will hurt

We'll have to agree to disagree. The race may change in the last few laps with Rupp in it. I could be wrong, but you could be, too.

... Plus that was a 5k in Oslo, Rupp will be racing a 10k fresh at World's. Oslo 5k settles nothing in this discussion.

Bekele is the only one in the world that can do that. (Beijing olympic 5k for example). Rupp cant, sorry.
