What animal wins a race that's 100m in water then 100m on land

That's because there's not much water where pronghorns live. Moose, by contrast, spend a huge amount of time in water (and many deer are good swimmers).

could be just me, but i think it is pretty apparent that it means "against any other animal", i.e., which animal would be fastest. kind of like asking "what animal would win in an abstract reasoning contest?"

Our pool here is 10 meters deep. No running on the bottom!

A 10 meter deep pool is nor preventing any hippo from running on the bottom. Those things are super athletes in the water. You can dq the hippo if you want, but this kind of structural barrier isn't going to do much.

I am thinking that the competition has to be in open water or a 100m pool with a ramp at the end of the water leading up to land, which should be grass. No turns in the water. No pool to jump out of. The ramp ensures that every animal can walk out of the water at the end of the swim. Grass is both a natural soft surface and one that doesn't give a particular species an advantage.

This should be a race that tests the combination of water and land speed, not ability to turn in water or jump out of a pool.

The pool should only be deep enough to ensure that the moose can't walk on the bottom and still breath above the water. The hippo is clearly allow to run along the bottom as the OP states that the race is "in water" not "swimming."

In these conditions, the seal wins.

10 meter deep pool?!? I call bs. Theres no way you guys are swimming around in a 30 foot deep pool.

The Chinese government is funding its construction for the greater glory of the PRC.

Since it is supposed to be a race, I assume it is on a specific course layout. All these hypothetical speed calculations are fine but if we were to encounter the REALITY of an actual race on an actual course, we must take into account other factors.

Most importantly, one must take into account the animals intelligence and trainability (can you get them to follow the course, go on the start command, not be distracted by or eat the competitors etc).

So let's just take some of the animals mentioned:

Cheetah--Not very trainable animal. Hates water. No way in hell are you ever going to be able to train it to jump in the water, and swim in a straight line 100m to a designated end point. It's going to get in the water and turn around and scramble right back out at the starting line as fast as it can.

Otter- Very very smart animal. Very trainable (learns complex tricks, can do mazes etc). Would easily follow the course. As mentioned, pretty fast in water and on land.

Seal- reasonably smart. Very trainable. Not as fast on land.

Polar Bear- smart but pretty nasty and not as trainable as black bears but still probably doable. Might maul a couple trainers until he gets it right.

Moose-??? They are known for being stubborn. But, I have no idea overall if they are trainable.

Horse (not sure if this animal was mentioned and I'm too lazy to go check)- smart enough. Definitely trainable. Would definitely follow the course. reasonably decent swimmer, much faster than moose on land.

Hippo-- Who cares how fast it is. It is one of the nastiest, ornery animals around. Good luck getting it to follow the course or even start.

Human--intelligent (although still dumb enough to possibly wipe itself and the rest of the planet out but that's another story). Trainable. Would follow the entire course for sure (unless it's got Katie Holmes disease). Medium speed in water and land.

Based on using criteria necessary to complete an ACTUAL race, I would say the finish order after 3 months of training would be:

1) Otter

2) Horse

3) Seal

4) Human

5) Polar Bear (possible DQ though)

Cheetah--DNF Hippo--DNS

The moose could be a wild card...

Watch how well the moose can stride in 3 feet of water. With this type of transition ability, it's really a 90m swim then a 110m sprint for the moose.

2. Will there be drug testing for the cheetahs. Even though they'll miss the podium, they should still be held to the same standard.

Wow, who would have thought it'd be so hard to get information online about land animals' swimming speeds or an aquatic's land speed? I don't care that you're studying the hydrodynamics of an otter's tail, I want to know how fast a water snake can go on land, sheesh!

Can't find speeds for frogs, swim speed for lizards that can run about 20mph, swim speed for horses, swim speeds for land snakes and land speed for water snakes. Maybe it's just down to the bear/otter/moose race...

I think the frogs, snakes, lizards, etc, don't have the endurance for a 100m race. Even for a large lizard, that's 1000 body-lengths. I bet they'd get too tired to continue.

I think it's moose vs horse vs river otter. I really can't see the hippo or polar bear as a contender. They are just so darn huge. No way can they get that acceleration going. It'd be like Reese Hoffa coming out of blocks. Plus, that video of the hippo "running" was rather pathetic.

Put a 100m bike ride in the middle, and you have to think that the bear will be right back in the mix.
