Rupp does the 30-40

Not that I could do it, but 24 laps at 30-40 200's sounds less impressive when you consider that Bekele's 10K record amounts to 25 laps at 31.5-31.5.

Doesn't pretty much EVERY run of six miles or so seem kind of less impressive, compared to that?

you are exactly right. Rupp is a coddled baby...be part of the team and train under vig or go continue to be spoon fed and get your butt wiped for you by salazar and nike.

Maybe rupp will be able to run epic workouts when it's 65 degrees and no wind in Oregon, or he'll run a decent rabitted time trail, but racing is what counts which requires some guts, and until he grows some testicles, he's not doing shit on the international stage.

I use to do 43/32 over 5k back in college and the hard parts are not the 32s, its the 43's especially towards the end of the workout. Your body automaticly switches to the faster pace, but you really have to work at keeping up the slower 200.

according to the "more on rupp's workout" article, he did 20 miles at 5:18 pace, nice - straight out of the mcdougal school of training.

that's usually what i do the weekend after i have metatarsal pain. hopefully he's at least keeping it on the crete and avoiding any bumps on grass or trails that might hurt his foot more.

It's not a defensive statement, simply a pre-emptive statement. I've read over and over on this site about Rupp's "advantages", and the main objection seems to be that he has them while in college.To that point, ALL of the Oregon team has access to the underwater treadmill (one at Hayward, two at the Casanova center) and the Alter G (two at Hayward Field). The altitude tent was purchased by Galen's family - and other families (at UofO and elsewhere) certainly could purchase them as well. (Please don't tell me that not everyone can afford one; I understand that. Certainly some of the top runners have families that could afford them if they chose.) My understanding is that many other schools (BYU, Cal, Wisco, etc..) either already have or are in the process of purchasing these same training modalities. (Am I using the word "modality" properly?)In terms of supporting Rupp, you are absolutely right that you can choose who you support. You needn't support Rupp, but why don't we spend our time supporting the guys we want rather than tearing down the ones we don't like. I'll continue to support Rupp regardless of his "professionalism". He was cleared by the NCAA; he maintains his eligibility. All of you who are outraged that Rupp didn't act like "part of the team" by not running, check out which Ducks did run Saturday's race and which ones didn't. Most of the top Ducks sat out, as this wasn't an important competition.

For the 19' 5k kid,

3. instead of 200m, just split the track into 3 ~133m segments and go.

The workout is really Igloi inspired. Though it favors the runner limited more by muscle power than oxygen delivery, it shifts the muscle recruitment patterns nicely. It is a good meeting ground for runners of varying fiber type but roughly similar performance capability. Some will make the 30 easier and some will make the 40 easier.

Like Rupp admits, the key is not bashing the fast 200m. For example, Rupp can run 8 30's consecultively, but only 5 29's consecutively.

As far as giving the Kenyan kid a race in XC, the 800 slow/fast pattern Dellinger gave Salazar prior to NYC would be the better call for Rupp, but he'll still have a tough time either way. His best hope is that someone overtrains his competition. So that's almost a coin flip with most NCAA coaches.

More is the point why ALL college programs don't take advantage of the technologies that CURRENTLY exist - like the ones that Rupp uses in order to keep even remotely close to the Africans. But then it's easier to assume that all of them are overage (which stops being relevant at 20 anyway) or on drugs. Since the US athetes (in general) can't compete on ability or work ethic (perhaps) then they could at least utilize the possible advantages (if what the anti-Rupp naysayers claim is HIS only advantage) that many colleges could afford for their athletes. Perhaps then, instead of the only handful of athletes that can run with africans, there might (given the HUGE number of athletes in US colleges) be more parity amongst distance runners. Heck even utlizing heart-rate monitors could be useful for some runners, let alone the anti-gravity and underwater treadmills and altitude tents.

What makes Rupp a pro is simply his attitude - something that more college athletes could adopt - it's about becoming something more than a big fish in a little pond (like the NCAA). It has NOTHING to do with his NCAA eligibility. As long as he is bona fide student within the age-range stipulated by the NCAA, then all other advantages are merely what others wish they had - so tantamount to jealousy. Should all athletes whose parents are loaded be refused admission to college because their parents have the advantage of money? Rupp is fortunate that he has a Salazar type situation as part of his development. The fact that so many athletes are held back by the confines of HS programs (even if there are good HS coaches and teams)is why the US doesn't dominate the world in distance running. That kids like Rupp can get to the 27.30's shows that more athletes could do so as well - not that he isn't particularly talented. Instead of berating him and and the situation the clamour should be why there isn't more of this in the College ranks. It's like complaining that home-schooled kids have an advantage (like Neely Spence) in getting the coaching they want - YOU people allow the structure (HS) to predominate, then expect the athletes (as "Pro's" - whatever that means apart from being paid to run) to wait until thety are finished school to actually run well. No wonder that America is so far behind the Africans with that attitude. Then people actually think that programs like Hanson's (which is excellent IMO) will provide the necessary impetus to close the gap? There aren't enough of them to really make a big dent. The structure is the problem, not Galen Rupp, and as long as attitudes exist that are more concerned with holding athletes back in America, then don't expect to close the gap anytime soon.

Not sure what the purpose is for cross-country. If you are training for an international 10K on the track, the pace can change to a ridiculous extent from one lap to the next (or 5K: witness the difference between the slowest lap in the Oly. final 72 vs the fastest lap 54?). I think that NCAA cross-country is more even paced, especially at a fairly even course like Terre Haute. Maybe that is what Rupp is REALLY training for now. Probably pretty smart, since the Liberty kid is going to thump him at NCAA's.

Tom Donnelly at Haverford prescribed this workout for Marcus O'Sullivan and Karl Paranya back in the day. This is a good strength workout for anyone wanting to run fast. Rupp has the tools to be a terrific runner, heck, he beat Abdi in the Olympic 10k. Nike and Salazzar love him, who isn't envious on here, bunch of jealous bashers, support the kid and be glad we have a system for folks. Hopefully he'll beat Chelanga come NCAA XC Nats.

Rupp is the 2nd fastest guy in the 10K in the U.S. period. He beats every professional runner in the U.S. (except for Abdi) who has access to same advantages he does. So you are saying that these other runners in college (who according to you are just as talented as Rupp and work as hard as him) could be the 2nd best in the U.S./top 20 in the olympics if only they had the same training advantages as Rupp?You astound me with your lack of reasoning.

By contention I meant "scoring", and that at a college level. You can continue to ignore the fact that Rupp is a pro, and yes that is (by definition) a "different path" than college athletes take.

For me this is not about some blue collar dream. I think it's subterfuge that rupp's fanboys continually bring this up. It really comes down to a pro competing at college level, and getting away with it.

You know, who in the hell really cares? Find me another American runner not of direct African descent that could approach the AR in the 10k and lap a 28:30 guy, besides MAYBE Ritz. I can see being skeptical when there's a reason, but some people on this topic are just being a-holes because it's Rupp we're talking about.

I can believe Rupp did this workout. I was in 28:45 shape and did 3 times 3200 in 30/40 but of course I had a 5 minute break.

He's run 27:33 so I buy it.

I used to cheat a little however, by starting my fast 200 10 meters early and running fast past the line so I could go real slow for a bit before picking it back up on the 40 second lap.

His 30/40 might also really been 31/39 rounding up each lap.
