I bet Alberto is wishing he waited a couple years for German Fernandez. That altitude tent and underwater treadmill could really help that kid.

Fernandez can definitely run that time.....especially in another month or two (when Rupp ran his).

German ran 4:00 for 1600m (about as fast as Rupp ever has), then 8:34 for 3200m 2 hrs later a couple weeks ago. Then today he ran 4:21-4:13, for 2 full miles. Both times, LEADING THE ENTIRE THING.

GALEN COULD NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER DO THAT. He couldn't beat Matt "Badass Mofo" Withrow at Footlocker for Christsakes.

He also broke Galen's 3K record today by 4 seconds en route.

I think with some runners faster than himself in the race, German could go 8:29 for 2 miles.

Quite frankly I am amazed at all the hype concerning Rupp. He has been almost a nonentity at the international level. The chance of him getting an Olympic medal are slim to none. The best he can do is make the US Olympic team and maybe make an Olympic final.

Since when did 11th in the World become a "nonentity at the international level"? I love the selective memory of this message board's posters.

Rupp had an individualized, personal training plan, professional gear/travel/assistance, with some of the best facilities and equipment in the country, including international traveling/racing outside of junior champ races while being coached by arguably one of the greatest distance runners in American history while having personally assigned rabbits during workouts (not to mention training with Olympic hopefuls) all while in High School.

Given the circumstances,I'd consider Fernandez's 8:34 2-mile superior.

If his name were Galen Kibirop (KEN) and he was running 27:33, would you consider him an entity on the international level? No.

Boy, it must take you a long time to read race results, if you have to analyze the life history of each finisher to determine the relative worth of the time they ran.

We all understand the differences between kids who come from heavy or sophisticated training backgrounds compared to relatively untapped kids. It certainly makes a difference to how we view their future prospects. But an 8:34 national record is an 8:34 (and a 13:37 is a 13:37), and neither gets points added or subtracted for what their preparation was like.

definitely not bad, but keep in mind that if ethiopia and kenya were allowed to field as many athletes as they wanted it'd probably be more like 40th.

Fernandez didn't win footlocker either...He actually got third.

You are not using very good examples. German is a strength runner, he might be the only one in history that could have pulled that double off. But that does not mean he could do what Rupp did.

Saying that Fernandez could definitely run 13:37 is naive. An 8:34 is around 13:50 at BEST as far as comparability goes.

I'm not saying he can't break it. He is the best prep 2 miler in history. He has a legit shot. But Rupp's performance is a step better.

Dude, he could run 65.5s all day...Especially if he was following people (though he may be able to do it by himself). Rupp's performance is not "a step better." How can you possibly say an 8:34 2 Mile is a 13:50 5K "at best?" Hmm. Interesting. Is that why HS kids have gone faster than 13:50 a handful of times, but never faster than 8:36??...despite having attempted the 2 Mile about 1,000,000 more times? Think about it.

I realize Fernandez didn't win Footlocker, but he's in a completely different situation than Golden Boy Rupp was. The kid's finally had a good year of solid running, and showing some incredible consistancy and strength this track season. His upside is apparently out of this world.

So stop blowing Rupp and start a fund to get THIS kid some Nike backing!

I have no disagreement as far as his upside is concerned. I hope he does great things. I am not hater. But just because he doesn't have special treatment like Rupp and may have more upside does not make his 8:34 better then 13:37. Anyways you cut and slice it, it just ain't going to happen.

It is only slightly better on the points tables but the race conditions were much better for Galen - He got towed around the track in a pack in a fast level-2 track meet under perfect conditions.
