Are ther any NFL guys that could go sub 10 in the 2 mile?

Please make this thread go away. It is the dumbest discussion ever, primarily because of the retarded logic used and false conclusions made (i.e. above poster).

For instance, a hs qb is not the equivalent to a nfl qb. Maybe the reason he could run 4:07 for the mile was because he was built like a pussy and also hence why he isn't in the nfl.

Percy Harvin from Florida was a pretty serious track threat in high school in Virginia. He won 5 events at the AAA state meet in 2005 (100,200,4x1,LJ,TJ) and went to practice 4 times all spring. My guess is that there are guys out there that could do something similar in the distance events, I just can't think of any.

I am really large for a runner. I have a footballish build as I weigh about 180 (5'11") even while running about 70 miles a week. I am below 8% body fat. My 2 mile PR is 10:04. That said, I am not trained for sprinting at all. I am downright slow at fast twitch oriented events. I do lift weights a fair amount and am reasonably strong but I am not quick at all.

Aside from tooting my own horn I would like to add that there has to be a handful of NFLers who can break 10 right now. It is not that fast. It is a good high school time.

I am 100% certain that there are many many NFLers who could break 10 with 10 weeks of training for it.

300 pounds is a good high school bench press. Doesn't mean a pro distance runner could achieve it in 10 weeks.

I'll never forget when I was a sophomore in high school running our first "practice meet" of the season. I was running the 2-mile & was on the line next to a guy that was an all-state linebacker. He was 6'2", 220lbs., looked like he was 25 years old with a full beard, wearing heavy gray sweat pants & cross training shoes. He went straight to the lead & ran a very comfortable 10:30. I never did catch him. He looked like he could've run 10:00 if someone was pushing him. About an hour later, he high jumped 6'. He said he ran "about a mile a day" as part of football conditioning.

just because you all are jackasses about this: Coley Candaele was starting quarterback for his high school team which won three California state championships. He was named California state football player of the year his senior year. He ran track one year in high school; he ran 4:07.

If he did not go to Oregon, he could easily have been a starting quarterback in college.

If you read my posts in this thread, I already mentioned an NFL player who I am fairly certain broke 10:00 while an active NFL player (Mick Luckhurst), i.e. more than just idle speculation and bashing.

i dont think any nfl players could run under 10 minutes for 2 miles, but if they trained for it who knows, example alan page was a defensive end for the minnesota vikings playing at 260-270 pounds, after his nfl career was over he started running got down to about 180 pounds and ran close to 3 hours for the marathon, someone please help me with his actual time, also he went to law school and i believe is still on the minesota state supreme court. so who is to say if he just retired after the nfl and put all his eggs into running he wouldnt have been able to run a little faster and maybe sub 10 for 2 miles. we can guess, but we wont ever know.

All these guys who are talking about guys who are talking about good high school football players who ran under 10 minutes are missing the point. The point is that what makes an exceptional football player, a player who can make it in the NFL (not just as a starter on the local high school team in some podunk town), are exactly the things that make for a TERRIBLE distance runner.

Here are some of the things an NFL player will have:

1. High muscle mass and body weight.

2. High proportion of fast twitch muscle fibre

3. Optimised performance of energy production from ATP-CP

4. Big, strong, durable upper body

All of these things will make him a crappy distance runner, and unlikely to go under 10 minutes. A high school kid who is good at football and can go under 10 minutes is simply a compromise athlete - probably not good enough to make it in the NFL partly BECAUSE he is able to do things like run under 10 minutes. That's not to say that he won't be able to develop into an NFL player, but by that time HE PROBABLY WON'T BE RUNNING UNDER 10 MINUTES ANY MORE.

Now, if a smaller NFL player (DB, receiver) deliberately lost a bunch of weight (and along with it, a fair bit of strength), and trained his cardiovascular system intensively, then yes he might be able to do 10 minutes. BUT THEN HE WOULDN'T BE AS GOOD AT FOOTBALL ANYMORE. He would be smaller, slower and weaker.

There is no single "general athleticism" attribute. The requirements of each sport are specific. Athletes don't have "athleticism", they have strength, or power, or cardiovascular endurance, or kinesthetic awareness, or speed. Or they have some combination of these attributes that matches well with the requirements of their sport and allows them to excel.

Training adaptations are SPECIFIC. Optimising strength, size and speed over short distances (10-40m) only happens by DETRAINING cardiovascular endurance. This is why sprinters and NFL players don't run distance - it would make them worse at what they do.

Sport scientists everywhere are reading this thread and cringing.

Damn I screwed up. I meant to say 7:30 for 2400 meters. I can't count. He ran 5:00 minute pace for 2400 meters. My bad I am sorry to upset everyone so much. I read this in the Atlanta Journal/Constitution. Maybe someone could ask him if he really did it.

Did you ever stop to wonder why Candaele went to Oregon on a track scholarship after running only one year despite being football player of the year in CA? Did he just hate football or something? I think it's more likely that he was too small for NCAA ball so he took his athletic talent in another direction.

The nation is full of guys who were absolute studs at some sport in high school who could not make it at the next level because of size.

Oregon football sucked a nut when Candaele was there. Why wasn't he the starting quarterback?

On top of that, the NCAA is full of really great quarterbacks who never get drafted, again because of size. If you were around during Candaele's time you might remember a QB from Air Force named Dee Dowis who was a Heisman trophy finalist. He wasn't even drafted.

Those events all all speed and power based....something you need a lot of in football. In football you need speed, power, and size. You'll find high schoolers playing footbal and running 10:00 two milers because they really aren't that good in football, not NFL level anyway.

We have these discussions all the time. Success at one sport does not equal success at a different sport. Success at one distance does not equal success at a longer or shorter distance.

Iverson did not run a 5:00 mile, Meb/Geb/Webb can not win the Western States 100mi, Warner would be a poor 800m runner, and no NFL player would break 10:00 in the 2mile.

This is so pathetic........who cares if college or NFL players can run a certain time? I am sure they don't....while they are basking in the glory of their teams, or counting their money. And all of you doofus's that talk about beating someone as a sophomore in high school...sheesh! Get over it! Football players are a different breed....they are atop the food chain.....and they swat you little puny distance runners away like the annoying flies that you are. Face it....you do something different than they do...and your sport will NEVER EVER get the glory that theirs does. And it will NEVER change. But you will more than likely be a much healthier and longer lived person than they.....having never subjected your bodies to the punishment that they do. The path divided in the fall...those you have the size and skill to play football and the rest of you......who find something else to do. You guys need to get your heads out of your butts and work on your personalities....then you might have girlfriends someday. Or get laid....
